I'm about to buy a new cooker for the flat. Can be gas/electric/dual. I want 60cm wide.

Any opinions over fuel type would be appreciated.

Gas is indeed an option and tbh slightly preferred as I believe it to me more controllable.

You got the gas pipework there already?

Cooking with gas is always nicer, more controlled.

Thats not to say you can't cook on electric, you just need to be more aware of what temp the plates are getting too.. as if you go too hot it takes the metal a long time to cool down.

Ceramic is best if you want electric, cools quicker.

Yeh got the gas fitting so that's ok.

More I think about it Gas is the way to go.

So now need a reliable brand with self cleaning over (preferred) for £500 or am I asking for too much ?

Why?

Does no one else know about cookers? :p

I'd go for gas if you have the option. My S/S indecit has done me well for about 7 years.

Because he worked in a cooker factory repeatedly boiling pans of water for 27 years! ;)

p.s. I didnt say he was the only person to ask :)

My parents live in a flat and recently went to buy a new cooker but they were restricted to a very small range of cookers due to living in a flat. Some health and safety/goverment policy apparently.

One thing that really annoys me about cookers is that on some, you can hardly fathom what the various oven settings are, so get one that is easy to understand. I've seen high end Neff cookers that have this problem, spoils a good cooker. On cheaper cookers, if the signage/labels on the cooker are lacquered onto stainless steel, it can be really easy to accidentally wipe them off when cleaning, so watch out for that.

Personally, I now prefer an electric hob. Yes you have to get used to it, but you never have trouble lighting burners or them blowing out as you do on gas.

Well I was the Quality Audit Technician at Hotpoint, Creda, Indesit, Ariston, Belling and Cannon for 27 years so give me a bit of respect please :)

My 'expert' opinion is to stay away from the above brands and buy German such as Bosch.
All my stuff is Bosch and the 4 colleagues I worked with also had Bosch.
The reason is because we sat through 1000s of quality meetings where Indesit wanted to have the quality of Bosch but had no chance with the cheap parts they built with.

If you have a 7 year old Indesit it was still made with decent parts.

The first 22 years we cooked food but the end results were exactly the same as water.
