to be honest it's just too loud to enjoy my games

accelero is a great cooler for the price

2nd that but make sure you also get the zalman vrm heatsink as well it's only about £3 to go with the Twin Turbo(which will take up 3 slots though). I had this setup on my 4870 512mb, and you can set the fan speed to about 60 or 70% in CCC and its just as quiet as a toxic 4870 1gig which I also had. You will have to wait for the prolimatech, which will probably be good but you will need to buy fans too(which might not be as quiet as the AC Twin turbo as they won't be controllable in CCC), and probably more expensive with stock issues.

how fussy is the 4870 in regards to having ram heatsinks read a few things on google earlier and people said they had trouble keeping the mem temps down.

With my AC twin turbo setup there were no probs with the mem temps whatsoever with the heatsinks that came with it although 1 of them needs slightly cut(2 mins with a dremmel) to fit. However without the zalman vrm heatsink, the vrm temps go crazy through the roof and will melt the card. This is the one i used

As my comment above whichever you pick make sure you sort out the vrm with cooling

If i look throught the gap on the side of my card i can already see something like that in a line but it's aluminium goes from one side of the card to the other..
do i need to scrap the stock one

this already looks like a vram heat sink but to the left the smaller arrow there is thermal tape is this the thing i need to worry about

That's the VRM (voltage regulator) heatsink on the right, you don't need to replace it.

Whatever cooler you buy should come with suitable pads for the VRAM. However, if you get the Accelero the pads they supply are awful, better off getting some more (I have one on my 8800gt).

Some cooler just attatch to the gpu tho don't they then i would need to buy ram sinks to relace all the stock thermal pads wouldn't I ?

The AC twin turbo comes with ram sinks, some people have said they are not very good (due to the thermal tape) but if you clean the memory chips with a proper cleaning fluid and hold the sinks in place for a few seconds they should be ok.

I use this cooler and is almost silent, fan speed set to 50% and idles around 45c and is around 65c under load.
