I want a counter-strike source server to take to LAN parties, i dont want to spend a great deal but must be capable of hosting a 24 man server lag free :) Many thanks

you dont need an amazin spec machine to run a server, you just need amazing badnwidth, which a lan will already provide you, would it not be possible to run the server from your rig whilst playing the game?

Yeh thats what i'm planning on doing if something can't be sorted out :) But it'd be nice to get something permanant.

Also, about running it on my system whilst playing, my friend seems to think because css isnt dual core optimised i'll be effectively running on a 2.4GHz cpu. But i'm running the dedicated server stand alone and then joining it myself, surely this is classed as two processes and would utilise my dual core cpu? ... if ya understand any of that :p

So long as you set processor affinity correctly in Task Manager once the dedi is up and running, then yeah, you could get the dedi running one core1 and the game client running on core0.

Yeah you can either just make a LAN game within CSS or run a dedicated server in the background in Windows (and set it to use the second core), and load up CSS and join it. Any reasonable spec will host games. I have a dual Athlon XP 3200+ server in the telehouse which runs two games off each chip :)

Thanks for the quick response dudes :D I might leave it then and just run both off my system :) I'll have to look into how to set the server to run on the 2nd core, it's not something thats occured to me to set applications to certain cores lol

One of my dedicated servers is a dual core P4D, 512Mb RAM running debian and it handles source games fine, tho for windows or another OS and 24 player CSS you'd be better off with 1gig or more RAM.
