One thing you can look for is that some you can use on a hob, eg the original crock pot. Makes it a lot easier as you just prep in it on the hob the add anything else you want to add and drop it into the heated base.
Some you cannot do this and you end up using another pan or something if you want to say brown the meat. (Damn that just sounds so wrong, browning the meat lol)

Just use an oven. Had several slow cookers, always go back to the oven. Easier ,better and can cook any size you want. Just get a couple of terracotta pots.

I cannot state how awesome slow cookers are.

They are perfect for stews and curries. I bung everything in, stick it on low heat and it's ready when I get back from work. Lamb is the perfect meat, it comes out so tender once it has been stewed. Liver is great also :) :) :)

I've been living off our (cheap and cheerful) slow cooker for awhile and it's brilliant.

Will dig out the recipes for sticky orange chicken, sausage leek and apple casserole and tandoori chicken later - all taste fantastic. And don't worry about leaving it turned on when you're out, they're fine left alone.

rented accomodation and the oven is a) utterly nasty b) only cooks on super high heat with convection, not great for slow cooking.

I love the idea of prepping in the morning and coming home to a ready meal !! The smell is awesome too.

You got more chance of getting hit by a bus than an oven taking you or your house out. You don;t stand there watching it when you have a roast do you? Each to there own though.

There are enough similar videos on youtube to tell me it's a fairly common occurance. I'm not happy leaving a device like that on all day, especially when it's on it's own 32amp circuit.

When I'm making a roast dinner I'm in the house and I have smoke alarms.
