Ok I am currently running an AMD athlon 64 x2 Dual core 6000+ on a rather basic mother board with 2 gig ddr2 ram and the GPU is an ATI Radeon HD 4600 series.

Looking for a spec for a semi-decent upgrade which will provide a decent performance upgrade but also keep the price moderately low. I am also keen on getting a reasonably energy efficient system.

I would prefer to stick to AMD as they are cheaper and I am open to tri-cores and unlocking a 4th if I can still get those processors however I am not a big overclocking fan so a decent stock speed will do me fine.

I will reuse my current case and PSU if possible as the psu is a Tagan 600w so hofully it will be enough to support a quad core.

Go go for it spec me a mid range machine..

Another 2GB DDR2 RAM (Second hand) I have loads of the stuff laying around as does most people.

Get a 955BE Quad Athlon if your board supports it. (We need full specs and budget)

Then depending on what's left with your cash, buy the best GPU you can afford.

N.B. This is of course if gaming is what the machine is used for. You never said.

I was thinking about maybe going for an Nvidea GPU this time round? And what is this integrated HD 3000 graphics? and how does that work with the external GPU?

Go for one then. The AMD chip isn't set in stone.

The HD 3000 graphics is the graphics die built onto the 2500K processor. If you weren't using the system for gaming, you would use it's graphics as sort of onboard. It doesn't effect your graphics card... they don't work together or anything.

Just go on the shop website and look for a cheap Z68 board that offers Lucid... you will have your answer.
