...because it's quite good all round? Or is it fashionable to hate 206s this week?
On what planet has the 206 ever been good all round? Its woeful!

What? The 206 is bloody awful, probbaly one of the worst cars in the past 10 years. It's only saving grace - and thankfully for Peugeot it was one heck of a saving grace - is that as far as hatchbacks go it was very good looking.
Reliability, quality, driver appeal, cute looks

You pretty much need to have a spinal disfigurement to obtain a decent driving position because of the pedals. They are also unreliable and built with cheese. It's the worst car in it's market segment bar Korean rubbish.
Driving position is the only real complaint with the car tbh.
Says... everyone? It's pretty universally accepted. Couple of my friends had them (Well, one still does) and the amount they were going wrong was just comical.
Not sure why Evo would cover reliability issues with small hatchbacks though, or was that a cheap atttempt at a dig to undermine my opinion?
I don't own one but I like to listen to a reasoned argument as to why it might be poor. You haven't really provided one.

Golfs at this price will have massive miles and will be older too.

I've had that opinion long before I even registered here and a Fox was still a little furry animal.
What about a proven poor reliability record, no driver appeal whatsoever and questionable quality makes a good car? Other than the looks...what is going for it?

Driver appeal is something that makes a car "appeal" to a "driver". This can be performance, handling or something as simple as a decent seating position. The 206 has none of them.
The quality is questionable - actually its downright bad. The reliability is a strong indicator of this, but the general build quality - interior etc is very poor
