As above.

Taking into consideration the number of cars i've had, i want the next one to last. Granted, i don't do many miles, but i want a diesel now instead of a petrol.

Having what can only be described as a FANTASTIC mother, she has very kindly told me that the £300 (food, rent etc) that i pay her a month i can have, providing it goes into my savings each month.

This works out great for me. i don't have to take out a loan or finance to get a car, and that little bit extra each month works out to quite a lump when it comes to getting the car.

When March comes (which is when i'm buying the car) i'll have around £4,000 - £4,500 to spend.

I had my heart set on a 306 HDi, but i think with the money i have, i can get something a bit newer/nicer.

Any suggestions?

If i have to wait anotehr month to get a bit extra then i will do that, but i don't really want to be spending more than £5,000.

Phil

Just fancy one.

Don't do anywhere near mega mileage, but i've had several cars now and the next one i want to last :)

Your mother charges you £300 to stay there...? Christ man, move out! :p I pay that in a city centre apartment :p

(Granted that's not including tax, food and bills but still..)

It includes loan payments. I took out a loan through her a few years back for a car (never again!).

She'd much rather see me put it towards a nice, new car and then towards a house once the car is purchased.

Golf TDI, Focus TDCI? As a leftfield choice how about an Alfa or maybe an early Seat Ibiza Sport.

I don't like the newer Pugs - too many electrical gremlins. Same for Renault.

Don't get a diesel, you don't do the milage to warrant it, and any car you get will be cheaper/newer for the money with a petrol equivalent.

Been looking at Golfs, but they seem to be priced higher than usual Diesels, and come with higher mileages too :(

The Mk IV Golfs are very popular with private buyers and user chooser company car peeps. The best diesel engine in the class when launched, good economy and they're a nice place to be. I went Golf TDI shopping in 2000 and couldn't find or afford one, so ended up with a petrol.

If you don't mind a saloon the Bora is the same car for a lot less wedge.

Xsara VTR HDI... has the revised engine of the one in the 306, so an extra 20bhp as standard... remaps to 130-140 easily... very smart, looks like the VTS and is damn nippy. Again, you'll get a far newer Xsara compared to the 306, with far more toys.

oh and 110 quid a year to tax and 50mpg ;)

Could be just the area i'm searchign in, but the Xsara VTR HDi seems to be priced considerably higher than the 306.

really??

when i was originally looking at 306 HDIs, could not find anything below 4 grand had 80-90k+ on the clock and was 99-00... and that was over a period of around 3-4 months.

Yet you can pick up a '03 VTR HDI with low mileage for about 4k. Even cheaper privately.

I've just bought a Saab 9-3 with the 2.2 litre diesel... 115bhp that remaps to 160 :)

Insurance might be a bit steep for you but they are very comfortable pretty quick and not too bad price wise!

306s are well over priced for what they are. The Xsara is more car for your money, but it is more expensive on insurance and perhaps not as pretty to look at.

I work on the basis that i can't see it while i'm driving it ;)

Hmm will have a look around, i think the 306 interior looks a nicer place to be than the Xsara though...

it really isnt. seats are a lot more supportive, dash is basic in the 306 and looks a bit dated. dials are a lot nicer. list goes on. with the newer xsara, you should have less rattles too.

try both and see what you think. :)

the astra must have convinced her ;)

LOL :D

No, but she saw that i realised old cars (well, my cars, anyway.) are money pits, and recognised i was willing to save up for a nicer car, and wanted to make sure i had enough to get a nice one, rather than settling for 2nd best!

306 HDi !!

GTi-6 with a diesel engine in the front minus the leather interior.. :p

Hard to find though.
