Sooo, im really thinking about getting a dog – have never owned one before, so apologies for the random thread on a PC forum 

Some info to help in advice:

15 month old baby
House with Garden
Quiet road, near nice walks

I think we have an ideal position to house a dog, not sure on dog & child combo though…..

Dog Requirements:

Biggish, well not a small yappy thing – so knee height size min. if you see what I mean?

Cheap to maintain (I know they are all costly, but I don’t want to be forking out for all sorts of bills because the breed is costly)

Friendly, I know Dogs act as they are treated, but the misses wouldn’t let me bring in a fighting dog / aggressive breed!

Not too demanding, I will obviously take dog for walks, but a dog that could ‘cope’ with a run in the garden and not need a walk every 2 hours or so!

Doesn’t need to be a pedigree, happy with a cross etc

Prefer not to have to take to classes to get Dog obedient (not sure if that is breed specific..)

My mum has a dog, it’s a Spaniel (I think) long floppy ears, looks like something from Dogtanian…. Bundles of energy, probably too much for me…

All advice appreciated, am googling links at the same time – but I though no harm in asking other ‘potential’ owners on a friendly forum

Cheers,

Labrador, without doubt.

A young rescue dog from RSPCA or other charity, they will want you to get him/her ''fixed'' by a vet at your expense
A retired greyhound, don't worry they do not need walking often as they are bred for just one quick dash as opposed to Dalmatians which were bred to run alongside carriages all day, every day

With young children I would advise against things like Jack Russell's and terriers, from experience they are not a particularly good combination.

lab would be the obvious choice, I would also recommend a dalmation.

Lab and Dalmation have to be your options here. We had a Dalmation when I was growing up and she was brilliant with me. Taught me how to walk by allowing my to pull myself up by her ears, laid under the window sill so I could climb up and see outside... She was awesome.

Labs are pretty much in the same vein.

Someone suggested a Jack Russell. Bad idea.

Our Lab is 5 months old now, very friendly and very obediant, is getting on very well with his training, learning very quickly. Loves attention as all dogs do. I don't think you'll find a "cheap" dog to maintain really, they all cost as much as each other. We spend about £40 on toys monthly!

The pup cost us £250 when we got him in.

I like whoring this pic :D

I'd agree with this although you do need to keep them on a leash if they will be near any small animals, particularly if they have only recently retired and the chase instinct will still be very strong.

On similar lines but rather smaller a whippet can make an excellent pet, very tolerant dogs albeit they quite often feel the cold and very restful while in the house but happy to amuse themselves running while outside.

Bull terrier.

Providing it can live beyond it's first 18mths you should be fine with a Bull Terrier. Food wise, I and others can advise on a perfect diet that is cheaper than you think.

Bull Terriers are also known as the "clown" of the dog world.

LOL. Bull Terriers HATE going for walks. They just want to sleep.

Bull Terrier. If it does something and you give it a treat, it'll keep doing it because they're food mad.

Bull Terrier + child in the house = more likely disaster.

He doesn't want a fighting breed.

Plus if he's anything like me he wouldn't want an ugly monstrosity like that in his house.

Definatley Labs. I grew up with one, was an awesome dog.

Thing with Cross breeds is you have to be careful, you could be getting the bad points of two breeds, like temprement and aliements common to both breeds.

A labrador sounds a good idea to me or we had a King Charles Spaniel when I was young awesome dog, loving and playful kid friendly and IIRC didn't slober that much (like labs do)

Aero

Another recommendation is an Alsation. Most loyal dogs we've ever had, had them whilst growing up. The whole family loved them, easily trained, great pets/guard dogs for the family.

Staffy's however are considered one of the more reliable breeds around children.
