Spec me a down filled jacket

Hi - I need a new winter coat and am leaning towards a down filled jacket (don't like heavy, woolen type coats). I had one made by Etnies which I picked one up online last year half price at £50 and it was pretty poor quality and left a trail of feather everywhere (esp the car seats).

Anyway, want something that is good quality, well put together, warm and isn't chavy (has North Face stuff gone that way?). So many brands to choose from, I'm not sure where my money would be best spent. I have a budget of around £150.

Any guidance would be much appreciated

How about a down filled dinner jacket?

If you want really warm you should look at RAB, excellent jackets, mine goes to -18 for use climbing/treking in Norway, and even brilliant customer service. Mine had started to fall apart after two seasons use, so I emailed them, sent it back, and a week later had a brand new one. Might be slightly more than your budget for the one I have, but there are cheaper ones.

Snow+Rock are always worth a look in though.

Thanks for the heads up - I found that voucher code and it works.

Keep in mind that even with the code a lot of the North Face stuff can be found cheaper elsewhere anyway. They change the items slightly each year to keep the prices up so last seasons stuff can be had with a heavy discount for pretty much the same item albeit with a different item number.

Go Outdoors have a good range of budget priced stuff.

Thanks for the advice - I could get the NF Massif jkt for £104 inc the discount and free postage. As far as I can tell it is a new addition to their range.
BTW, do you know anything about Columbia jackets?

No thats a standard NF jacket thats always in the range - but that price is good as its around £140-150 at most places.

Columbia jackets are not too bad, although I would consider them to be on the poor quality side to North Face (which is less than RAB). IMHO the North Face to go for is the Nuptse with 700 fill down (~£150).

Thanks for the replies, you've been very helpful.

TBH I'm not a serious outdoors person but I do play in a semi-pro covers band every week and its getting v cold late at night (such as last night which was about about -3c). I need something lightweight and that moves with you when lugging speakers etc into venues. I think the Massif is probably the best value for my needs, with the 700 goose fill. The Rab range seems very good but probably a bit beyond my means.

Just had a look at this Jack Wolfskin - http://www.wolf-paw.com/425/products/Jack_Wolfskin_Mens_Lhotse_Jacket_Black.aspx

How does this compare to the NF stuff?

I bought a Mountain Hard Wear a year or so ago, best coat I've ever had. If someone said it'd be this warm I'd wouldn't have believed it. I think I got it from blacks (quidco too).

I very rarely have to fasten it up, even when weather is as it is at the moment.

A guy at work has bought a Rab, which are again very good. Your £150 might get you something along the lines of mine, and probably Rab, if you can hunt out a bargain.

Thank you geese :)
