Spec me a drawing program

Hi gents,

I'm after recommendations for a decent drawing program for use on Lion. Don't want to spend a fortune as I'll only be using it to draw stuff on top of maps as part of stuff I do with a few games I play. But I do need something that supports layers and can add text, lines & shapes and other images on top of an imported image file (jpeg/png etc).

There are loads on the mac app store that might fit the bill, but I'm somewhat reluctant to part with my cash without a recommendation, and I don't exactly trust the app store reviews.

Any tips you guys have would be great.
 
GIMP should do the trick, a quick google seems it may have a couple of problems with Lion but people have got it running fine.

Free as well :)
 
Thanks, will give it a go. Have downloaded the Pixelmator trial as well so will see how they both fair.

Neither program seems to handle the 150Mb jpeg map file I'm working with all that well, but I suppose that's not too suprising
