Hi guys

Wonder if there is a driving game about that may help me with my driving lessons - just shifting through the gears and using the clutch, being in the right gear at the right time etc - i'm struggling at the mo on my lessons (21 now but only just decided to take them) - i have all 3 books and two DVD's but was just wondering if there is a game you guys could reccomend that might give me a boost.

Cheers chaps
:)

Are you kidding, you want to use a video game to learn to drive? I mean, I’ve heard of racing drivers using games to sometimes learn a track etc, but not to learn how to actually drive a car…

Want my advice, see if a family member has a small ish car they don’t mind putting some L Plates on, and sitting with you and get out in the real world..

Jeez.. Just what is this world coming to… lol

not only that - don't tell me.. You're using a keyboard to control the game... No mate, get out in a real car if you can find someone to help you out..

Hmm thats a tough one, unless you have a decent wheel and pedals for your PC its going to be difficult to find a game that accurately reflects real life driving. Few have gear shifts and 360 degree turning wheels with those that do the more expensive variety.

As tecman says driving games are not really a subsitute for real experience. Learning by doing is really the best way. His suggestion of finiding someone willing to give you extra practice in thier own car is a good one.

What is the frequency of lessons your having?, my parents could only afford 1 hour lesson a week so it took me a year to pass.

there is something that will teach all the manoeuvres and such. if its any good or not is another thing.

its published by the same people as who do the theory

however like everyone has said, you need to get the feel of the car all cars are different, and you have to get out there in real world and practice all the various manoeuvres or you won't pass the test

Bit of a tough one as simulators are based around tracks so wouldn't be any good for simulating everyday driving and the cars in them aren't your standard road cars either. So my advice is don't use any games for this one (unless you can get your hands on those simulator things I saw in BSM office, but they were almost as expensive as normal lessons).

Driving is all about confidence so as long as you have that you shouldn't have much trouble learning quickly, just make sure you don't have big gaps between your lessons.

Nothing really is similar. Maybe 'midtown madness' could teach you some extremely elementary road rules. But then within about 15 seconds you'd think 'screw this' and smash your way through the traffic!

there is "car simulator" coming out soon but you can say screw this and speed about without consequence

the closest i came to driving a real car wasn't even a sim, it was test drive unlimited with a g25.
uses the gears and clutch ...driving around real roads with other traffic

Yep im kidding - this is a joke thread i made simply for lulz.

No. I'm not. I only have my dad who will not let me practice in his car (too expensive..) and i have a lot going on at the mo. I just thought it might help if i'm having a bash on the PC to get me used to it...i have never before been intersted in cars or driving and would like to now boost my learning as much as i can as my new job will eventually require me to drive.

Nevermind then, thanks anyway though.

Cheers mate - thanks to all who replied seriously.

I keep getting told it's all about confidence, and it will 'click' eventually, just wish it would :P

I just thought there was maybe a sim that would require me to do the basics, such as drop into 2nd when taking a corner etc, let me focus on gear control, when and where and all that - but if there isn't that's fine. I'll just have to focus more!

Cheers again everyone.

I find LFS with a proper Wheel to be quite realistic, and drive on cruise servers even better - you can practice running from cops

LFS is great for getting round the track using the right gears at the right time etc. but lol, remember if you drive like your on a race circuit during your lessons, eh, you won't last very long.

Buy an ad-mag.

Buy a car for £50 - 100, as small an engine as you can find! (get your dad to insure it, and put you as a named driver)

Learn to drive :)

99.9% of people are capable of driving its just that we all have different appatudes for learning. I would'nt say driving is 'all' confidence its a mixture of confidence, experience, judgement, respect and common sense.

I would recommend trying to keep it going its much easier to learn the younger you are. Things will click eventually as you said and you might not even notice it when you do. If you havent already prehaps ask your instructor what he thinks will improve your driving.
