Hi,

Moving to my first home soonish so looking for an ISP ahead of time.
Will likely be buying line rental up front (line saver with bt or post office) so obviously dont need a package with that included. Nor do I require any TV package.

So what are the current recommended fibre ISP's around?
Is it worth going for the smaller ISP's such as Uno or Zen?

If it helps, will be high usage between myself and the OH between downloads, streaming and gaming.

Thanks for any help.

Plusnet are pretty good. I switched from BT a few months ago. Basically you get the same thing for a cheaper price as Plusnet are owned by BT.

Plusnet have UK call centres which makes it a whole lot easier, trust me!

Sky/Plusnet are basically your best bet. The UK based CS/TS is worth it but with Quidco cash back one will work out cheaper than the other. Plusnet don't mind you using your own hardware, Sky's TOS technically prohibits it but they haven't enforced it.

I just jumped off the Talktalk ship, which was on std broadband and paying about £36.00 on average and getting about 10mb d/l, which used to be sufficient but with all the streaming and things going on in my house nowadays, well it just doesn't cut the mustard anymore.

Earlier today Plusnet sent their engineer (contractor) to install fibre now that it is available in my area (the cabinet is right outside my house) ... managed to run a test before I left for work this afternoon and I had 78mb d/l and 19mb u/l and I now pay £26.99 for 6 months and then £36.99 per month.

So basically after 6 months on a cheaper deal, I then pay a few quid extra for 8x more d/l speed.

The only thing I need to sort is the fact I now have a router and a modem and as these plug into each other, they take one of the four LAN ports on the router....I use all four for various things, so now I am a LAN port short. The engineer did say to get a rj45 splitter from that high street store...unless I can get a modem/router for fibre. Had a quick Google but it gives conflicting results...anyone using a single fibre modem/router by chance?

I may actually be moving to Talk Talk from BT (all depends on how my negotiations with BT go).
Current promotions would give me line rental and up to 76mb fibre for £32.70 a month, almost £10/month cheaper than what I'm currently paying BT.

I know their CS isn't highly rated - but fingers crossed I shouldn't need to use it.

Buy a cheap switch. The £30 cash back from using Quidco for the new account should easily cover it and cables.

Pulse8, they use TalkTalk business, not to be confused with TalkTalk retail. No contract, just rolling.

Works out at £44 a month for line rental and 80/20 fibre...

thats a shame as plusnet launched there new router yesterday and its just the same as a bt homehub 5

.......... its just the same as a bt homehub 5

So are you saying this replaces the router AND modem (all in one) .. or is it just a different router ??

EDIT : Think I found it, I am sure it is just an all in one :

For

Integrated VDSL and ADSL modems
Impressive performance levels
CD-less setup and simple management

Against

Single default SSID assigned to both wavebands
Only USB 2.0 for media sharing
Limited client support for 802.11ac Wi-Fi at present

Just had the following conversation with Plusnet about their new Hub One :

So now I am confused about why they offer this Hub One, if it does not do everything in "one" .

Is he suggesting that it has the functions to do it but as of yet it is not capable.......or do you reckon he is talking out of his **** ?

Oh and today my faulty router port (as mentioned in my convo with Plusnet, has decided to light up and play ball)

He's talking rubbish. PlusNet have a reputation for service that they don't really deserve in my opinion.

The Plusnet Hub One is a 4-port wireless router. Currently it's only supplied to new fibre customers.

https://www.plus.net/home-broadband/broadband-only/

Unlimited Fibre features
Plusnet Hub One router
Our fastest router ever. Dual band Wi-Fi offers faster speeds around the house and smart wireless means less interference (P&P £6.99)

Do you have a BT home hub 5? If you do you can use it on plusnet by changing the username and password on it. If you wanted to use that rather than the modem / plusnet router.

If you're going to buy a new router then just buy one that has the features you'd want. I wouldn't go out of my way to purchase a Home Hub - but I would probably push PlusNet to provide what their own website says they give you.

Strange that there is a lot of recommendations for Plusnet here, yet anywhere else I read they are terrible. o_0

Will take a look at them and Zen anyways.
Thanks all.
