Spec me a flash

Hey guys,

I hate making threads like these as I'm sure there are so many already but just in case my requirements make the recommendations any different.

I recently got a 700D, mainly to take photos of my newborn son now and as he's growing up. They will be indoors a lot of the time and our flat has terrible lighting, so will need to use a flash. I understand the concept of bounce flashing so know it needs to be something that can be aimed away from the subject etc but just looking on various camera equipment sites gives so many different options that it's a bit overwhelming.

What would you guys recommend?

Budget is whatever it costs, although given I'm a novice when it comes to using a flash and baby photography, it would probably be silly to buy a really expensive flash now. Better to learn with a flash that's good enough then buy better later.

EDIT - Someone recommended me this one, is that the best for its price point or can you spend less and get the same. But then is this one going to be good enough to learn on and save some money in the mean time?

Yongnuo 565EX II or Yongnuo 568EX II if you can afford the extra.

I have a pair of 565's and I wish I had high speed sync (on the 568) for the times I shoot outside. However for anything indoor, it's perfect for your needs. If you want to future proof slightly, go for the 568. Both should work optically wireless with your camera in ETTL as well.

The 565 and the 568 can be compared to the Canon 580EX for a fraction of the price. And the Yongnuo gear is highly rated on here.

Thanks for that! That 568 is definitely within budget so would be happy to go for that. How does it compare to the Sigma I linked to? Both similar prices

I've had a sigma flash for as long as I've had a DSLR and it's bee fantastic they even updated the firmware on it when I moved to a 5dmkii to make it fully compatible with the slightly changed canon system.
