Hi guys,

I'm looking into getting some NAS storage for my home set up. All these NAS enclosures that you can buy seem to be awfully expensive so I'm thinking of building up a mini itx computer and running FreeNAS on it.

Firstly, do you reckon this is a good idea? It definitely beats the USB HDD connected to my router (~3Mb/s write speed, eugh!). My main use will to serve 1080p/DTS quality to the rest of my network via GigEthernet.

How good a processor will I need for this?
Are there any mini itx boards with loads of SATA connectivity?
Can you suggest a case that can fit mini itx plus maybe 4 or more HDDs?

Thanks for any help!

Buy a Proliant Microserver £140 with cashback, there is a big thread in the server section. Should meet your need perfectly.

Best option out there for multi drive NAS, can take four drives as standard, but you can plug more in

the money your going to spen on building something just get a synology box and be done with it. There is a reason there so popular

HP Proliant microserver - £199 + VAT, with £100 cashback from HP
Synology 4 drive box - nigh on £400

I know which I would choose!
