I've just been out on an unsucessful trip to find a new fridge freezer. It's Saturday night, I'm bored and no doubt that with asking in GD I'll get a decent recommendation and a good laugh :p

I know literally nothing about things like this, we bought a fridge/freezer when we moved in 4 years ago to keep food cold. It's naff, it freezes up too often and it's too small.

Guidelines for the new one -

It has to be under 60cm wide,
It has to be white (I'm not racist, but no other colour would match the kitchen :p),
It has to be frost free,
Ideally under £450-500 (cheaper the better)

Not thought of getting like a chest freezer and whacking it in the garage and then just having a larger fridge?
Underbench things tend to be a set size afaik

I would do but our garage is a parking space outside our 1st floor flat, we've got the worlds smallest kitchen hence the strict size requirement :(

In that price bracket you have a good range to choose from, Bosch, Siemens, Samsung and Zanussi. The Bosch and Siemens are pretty much the same thing so just get the cheapest.

Steer clear of Currys and Comet own brands, they are cheap rubbish made in China.

I wouldn't advise you get Hoover/Candy or anything made by Indesit etc.

Random question, do no single fridge units have plumbed chilled water?
I was randomly day dreaming today, but having an "acheivable" day dream. All the ones I found with a water dispenser was just a storage unit.

Not from my research about 2 months ago, no :(

I really wanted a plumbed in fridge but they were all double width and the space we had could only take a 55cm unit! :(

There are a number of fridge freezers on the market for your price range however, I would be wary of Hotpoint paint jobs as they are rust buckets from personal experience. After several friends bought different models, (similar paint) I took the plunge and all of our (theirs and mine) Hotpoint Graphite frost-free fridge freezers are rust pitted from top to bottom. Hotpoint models seem to get louder when they reach the two-year old mark and even white models tend to rust around the joins/seals of doors.

Here are a few that I found for your price range that might interest you (they do offer ‘White’ options as well):

Beko 60cm Stainless steel Family Sized Freestanding Fridge Freezer with Water Dispenser in Stainless steel Fridge capacity: 6.4 cu.ft. Freezer capacity: 4.6 cu.ft. Dimensions (mm) Height: 1906 Width: 595 Depth: 600 depending where you buy from around £350 - £440

Zanussi Frost Free Freestanding Fridge Freezer in Stainless Steel Look Gross capacity refrigerator: 226 litres Gross capacity freezer: 91 litres Height: 1750 Width: 595 Depth: 632 from around £330 - £430

Bosch Avantixx Energy Efficient 2m Freestanding Fridge Freezer in White Net fridge capacity: 250 litres Net freezer capacity: 94 litres Height: 2010 Width: 600 Depth: 650 from around £400 - £500

Suggest reviews sites, like “Which?” might help define good and bad points of brands.

There are many price-cut sites on line, suggest use a search engine using, as the key word, the brand of fridge freezer that takes your interest and follow on from there.

Good luck with your search. :-)

Mine, I don't have one, I repair them though.

Ahh, yeah, I guess there are too many cheap components in them and expensive to source but for value for money as a disposable/first time buy, they might be okay. As I said in one of my posts above, five years of no problems seem to be standard for the models I have bought over the years but Hotpoint (regarding noise and rust) within two years.

I would go for a Bosch but after reading how they seem to be using cheaper components in their dishwashers, well, I think it’s a case of buying what you can at a price you can afford and save for future upgrades.
