I had my house re-wired recently and I got the sparkies to put down some cat5e, he has fitted the network points in each of the rooms.
Most rooms have two network points, but I only have one near where the NTL broadband comes in. All of the cat5e cables (13 altogether) terminate in the

study. See pic below for setup. The ntl cable modem will need to stay in the front room as the optical cable isnt long enough.

I intend to get a wall mounted network cabinet + relevant components. I am considering power over ethernet enabled switches as I may in the future
consider putting in CCTV in the hallway etc.

I beleive the following is whats required.
24 port Patch panel (smallest I can get and allows extra cable to be fitted if needed in the future)
24 port switch (preferably power over ethernet)
punch down tool
cable tester?
RJ45 connectors
wall mounted network cabinet
enough patch cables for switch
firewall - I will probably get this at a later date as its probably overkill for home use.

I already have a wireless router that I can use as an access point.

Another consideration is that as the network components will be left on all the time the more energy efficient they are the better.

Will I need two cable testers to test each cable?

Can anyone recommend what equipment they would use to do this?
Finally how easy is it, I have created a couple of network cables before surely theres not much difference when terminating the cables into the patch
panel and can anyone recommend a guide that might be useful.

Thanks,

My experience with ether over powerline was not good ( now are paper weights )
This is power OVER Ethernet, not sending the signal through powerlines!

Nope to be honest its all fairly straight forward, patch-panel is colour coded to show which wire goes where.

24port POE switch is gunna be alil pricey though?

Enjoy

You're looking at around £300 for a reasonable brand PoE supply (full 24 ports not just half like many have). You only need one cable tester as they split in half and you put one on one end (so a working patch lead into the wall socket) and one on the other end to test.

Other than that it all looks reasonable. I use a 1U server as my routing/firewall box and i don't consider that overkill...

Thanks for the replies.
Power over ethernet is quite expensive so I might just go with a normal 24 port switch for now, then hopefully prices shall come down soonish. Can anyone recommend certain models? Or does it not really matter if I go for well known brands like d-link and netgear?
Might have to get a 1 U server as well and a NAS box at a later date,

Thanks,

I doubt PoE will ever become cheaper - it's been around for years. Brands like Linksys/Netgear Buisness range are ok for home, but cisco, hp or 3Com would be better.

Do you really need 24 ports with PoE? If you only need 1 just get a normal switch and get a power injector to inject power on the 1 cable that you need to use PoE on.

ahh thanks. I think I'll speck it up with netlink and then see how much more cisco will be.

Yeah I dont really need 24 ports with POE so I'll just get a couple of those power injectors as and when required, do they work ok (tbh I didnt know they existed).

thanks

They seem to work ok, we used a few to setup some Cisco wireless kit in the factory where I used to work.

I think we also got some for some webcams and they all seemed to work fine. Not sure what the prices are as they came with the kit we bought but I would imagine that you can save quite a lot of money compared to a full PoE switch.
