spec Me a game like aoe

I'm after a game like Age of empires 1 and 2. Some city building some rts combat. Preferably set 1700s and earlier. I have aoe 1 to 3 and anno 1404. Any ideas? It doesn't have to be recent and doesnt have to be 3D... Cheers!

empire earth. Same genre and very similar feel to aoe but instead of the 4-5 epochs that aoe has, there are 15 epochs ranging from the stone age to the future. Also its about the same age as aoe (1999 release iirc)

dont bother with the sequels imo. ee2 looks prettier but felt very hollow in term of gameplay and ee3 was plain rubbish.

Basically any rts with resource gathering is like aoe.

Warcraft 3 is similar imo.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I saw Cossacks for about £3 in a Bournemouth game shop so that might be my next buy! I picked up Rise and Fall Civilisations at War as that looked ok...
