I'm looking for a game where you command a ship or fleet of ships. Preferably in real time but not a C&C type type game. There was a Startrek game where you could 'command' a range of ships in real time battle so something like that.

Basically I've been watching far too much SG Atlantis/Battlestar and want to have a go myself lol.

Any game to suit my needs?

RTS:

Star wars empire at war
Start trek armada 1 & 2
Star trek botf ( its a tbs game with rts battles)
Homeworld 1&2
Space empires 5 ( tbs game, real time btls)
Galactic civilizations 2 ( tbs game, real time battles )

There are some more but can't exactly renember them.

Other:

There's star trek bridge commander wich imo, together with a lot of mods, is the best game where u command a single ship, if you wana check it out then definatly check out: www.bcfiles.com
There's X3 reunion with great graphics but it takes a lot of patience untill you can actually '' battle away ''.
Theres Star trek legacy wich imo is just a game that failed miserably, but some like it.

Not exactly commanding a fleet of ships but Freelancer is a classic...

X2 or X3 are the obvious choices for flying around style space games:)

For RTS it has to be Homeworld, by all means also try HW2 and Cataclysm but HW1 truly was years ahead of it's time and is still a damn fine game today. Many have tried but all failed to better the 3d RTS space master.

Ditto,

Also, its a bit outdated but ranked as one of the finest space games by microsoft called Freelancer.

empire at war with some sort of epic battle mod (or just increase the unit cap/lower costs in the xml files urself, its pretty easy to do). lots of good action, and its good if you like star wars i guess

For space combat Freespace 2 is unrivaled (better than Freespace). You don't control a fleet of ships at the same time, but you do get to fly a variety of craft and also get teammates.

In terms of actually 'commanding' a fleet, nexus the Jupiter incident would probably be your best bet.

The game has an extremely solid storyline, at the start of each level you are given a group of ships to control, each with a weapon load out of your choice, you can choose which weapons they attack with, what formations to use, what tactics etc. The units carry on through each level, there isn't any base as such, so what you're given at the start of a level is what you get, you can't build replacements.

Basically its a space battle game that relies completely in tactical play, no bothering with resources etc. I loved it.

One example of how hinged on tactics the game is would be a level that i attempted and got wiped out pretty fast, i then had a think, reworked my formations and weapons and managed to complete the mission with no losses whatsoever.

Cannot recommend this game enough, its absolutely awesome. Loved every bit of it, the storyline the control structure, the customisations of the ships, the pretty explosions.
