Hi folks,

My 3.5 year old Clevo P170HM has given up the ghost and needs replacing. I am looking for suggestions of a high end gaming laptop. I work away from home a lot hence the need for a laptop rather than a desktop. So far I've identified the following possible candidates

ASUS G750JZ
MSI GT72
Clevo based on P170EM

I am interested in people's experiences of these machines, or any others along similar lines. Some things to consider:-

- 17.3 inch only
- I do not want an SLI laptop (bad experiences in the past)
- Fastest CPU/GPU possible within budget (most likely 4810MQ/880m)
- Manufacturer warranty for as long as possible (these things always break eventually).
- It will almost always be used with the attached screen, so IQ is important
- Good cooling, it will be used on my lap regularly with a lap tray. I do not want loud fans!
- Dont care about styling particularly, build quality is much more important
- Dont care about battery life, will always be plugged in.
- Quality of internal speakers not too important, will mostly be used with headphones
- Stuff like Blu Ray, free mice etc are nice to haves - wont sway a purchase on their own.

Things I am particularly interested in opinions on

- Picture quality - viewing angles especially
- Clevo build quality is known to me, what are people's opinions on MSI/ASUS?
- Similar to above, customer service experiences especially with getting warranty repairs are appreciated.
- GTX880m heat issues, anyone suffered or noticed a solution handling it particularly well?
- Optimus switching, how annoying can this be?
- M.2 vs mSATA SSDs, any reason to weigh one higher than another?

Any help appreciated :)

HI Brok,

I am only replying to your question because no-one has fed-back on the machines you have as candidates.

Looking at your list of desires, I am suggesting the P25X as a candidate for you because it ticks a lot of your boxes and OcUK have currently got £200 off, so brings it in just on your budget.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply, unfortunately this is 15.6 inch screen and I am after a 17.3. Otherwise, its a nice spec!
