Requirements as follows:
  • Priority is single/lightly threaded CPU performance
  • Needs to support MUX i.e. not passing through integrated gfx
  • Primary use case is for playing an old OpenGL game at extreme framerates,
  • Not too bothered about RAM and Storage
  • Big high refresh rate, low resolution, low latency screen preferred
  • Budget not a big concern
  • Don't need to buy for a few months so happy to wait
I'm thinking the best best is a 12700H or 12900H, but unsure how the 6900HX shapes up in comparison? Paired with a RTX 3000 series. But is there anything coming out the next few months that could move the dial?

This is probably the best option I've found so far: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/msi-...-intel-i9-12900h-gaming-laptop-lt-2fz-ms.html
12900H, 165W RTX 3080, 360hz screen.

GPU is probably overkill, but I don't want to compromise and would use it for some modern games as well.

Let's assume I don't want it for an old opengl game then, and say I want a very powerful machine to handle the most demanding modern games that are poorly optimised for multithreading.
I guess technically, the game is new because it was updated this year... :)

My kids play a few older games (mainly strategy games) that are poorly optimised for multithreaded are usually just poorly optimised even for single threads and just run badly what ever you throw at them.
More RAM does seem to help though. I thought a new gaming laptop would be much better than the old Xeon they use, but it doesn't.

I would look and see who get good benchmarks and copy their rig.
