Spec me a gaming mouse

Hello all

I've had a Razer Copperhead mouse since I got my rig in Oct 2008. I'm a big Left for dead 2 player. I noticed that the left mouse button sits lower then the right and feels a bit loose. I thought it was my imagination that the response of the left button was a bit dodgy, but after a frustrating smoker incident in Left 4 Dead 2 I'm positive that the button is dodgy.

I'm looking for a mouse, preferably not too expensive (but I am open to expensive suggestions as long as it matches my specification requests) with buttons I can customise. I currently have Jump and crouch mapped to the 2 thumb buttons on my copperhead but I would like a 3rd and maybe a 4th button for quick weapon swap etc. Also I would like my new mouse to have a very good scroll wheel, the copperhead wheel feels cheap and plasticy, when i scroll to change weapons it often skips loads so I end up holding my medpak out like a clown.

Anyone have any suggestions?

If you liked the copperhead the you'd probably also like the deathadder, top buttons are ace though side two are a bit plasticy. Most comfortable i've used

Only has same number of buttons as the copperhead, though why'd you'd want more? It's hardly more practical. Side buttons for your ring finger are horrid to use

Yeah avid L4D2 player here too, MX518 best mouse i have ever used, better than any razer i have tried, that includes the copperhead or deathadder, of course that my opinion :)

The price isnt too shabby either.

MX518 (Optical) or the G500 (Laser) - I don't rate any Razer mice except maybe the Deathadder. Another cheap one to mention is the Microsoft Intellimouse 2.

Currently though, I have the G9x, which is simply sexual!

Thanks for the input guys. I had a look @ the MX518, many people seem to love this mouse, but to me it just looks horrible.

The G9x looks very tempting, after watching some reviews it looks like the way to go. Does anyone know if you can map the dpi buttons ingame and does it have darkfield?

Another mouse I like is the Logitech Performance MX mouse, has anyone used one of these for gaming? If so is it any good?

Go for the g500 tbh, you won't regret it. As for mapping, the G9X and g500 have on the fly sensitivity so you can program different dpi levels on the mouse. Not sure about g9x but the g500 has a dpi +/- button for 5 different dpi levels.

<3 the Razer deathadder, been using this one for a few years now has never failed :)

In CSS this is what I have bound:
M3 (wheel click) for nade, M4 (first on the side) flashbang, M5 Smoke :)

I went from a MX518 to this and ive gone through two the only problem I have is the feet wear down quickly :(

It has max of 5 different "profiles" (Can change how many profiles are stored). You can change DPI, sensitivity, vertical / horizontal scrolling speeds and even the color of the LEDs :p

+1 MX518

Who cares what it looks like? It's the best mouse I've ever used and my current one has been going for 4 years and is only just starting to show signs of wear and tear.

Someone who cares what their mouse looks like?

I'm in the same boat :/ the MX518 is just goddamn butt-ugly and my Lachesis is really annoying with the Z-tracking issues

I have experienced a lot of the mice mentioned in this thread.
The mx5-18 is exceptionally good, it tracks really well and it feels nice - though I agree it looks ugly.
My lachesis was great for a long time, but it eventually stopped working properly, also it feels odd in the hand. (it is now in pieces because I raged out, spun it by the cord and smashed it off the wall - because it was refusing to work properly)

The deathadder is the best mouse I have owned, it tracks as well - or very nearly as well, as the mx5-18 - it also looks brilliant and feels perfect in my hand.

though side two are a bit plasticy
yes, my back thumb button has broken loose, though I wasn't the one who broke it. I wouldn't say they feel bad though. I prefer them to the side buttons on the mx5-18. Also the deathadder has a much thinner cord than the mx5-18.

Only issue is the deathadder is something like twice the price of the mx5-18, but it is worth it in my opinion. Also, I wish both mice had slightly higher dpi, they are a bit slow on my desktop (do NOT touch windows sensitivity, ever, if you play cs - and turn off smoothing, and get the cpl mouse fix for the windows registry to turn off mouse accelleration which is innacurate and inconsistent)

Just had a look, the respawn edition of the deathadder has higher dpi than mine.

Also, the razer krait was quite good too, it felt oddly perfect for cod.

I have also been intrigued by the CM Sentinel, but it might be a bit too flashy and not perform like the deathadder does.

As for mats, I like the razer mantis (control, can't find the speed anywhere) and the titan everglide (best mat I have ever used). Other mats similar to these two are probably good aswell.
Never buy a steelseries icemat, they are horrible - you have to clean them about 10 times daily and grit appears on them and grinds about and you can feel it grinding around under your mouse and you feel it on your wrist, and the mat (it is glass by the way) shows up sweat like a mirror after a shower does with condensation, and gets generally moist and slippery.

The MX518 is pretty butt ugly, but it gets the job done on a budget.

If moneys no issue, go for a SteelSeries Xai, but I'd recommend an MX518.

I have recently changed my mouse from a Copperhead that I also used for same time that you have.

I tried the Razer Imperator but it is awful still (laser tracking issues)

I then got involved with the Razer Deathadder and have to say I am happy. Have not plugged my Copperhead back in since.

I am still adjusting to the shape difference (not massive but noticeable) but the tracking IS excellent and I'm glad I got it.

Yes the mx518 is VERy popular but like some on here I agree that it's too goddamn ugly and the main reason why I think it is very popular is its price.

Price/performance a microsoft or mx518 would win

But overall I would get the deathadder.

It also now matches my Antec 1200 and Razer Lycosa Keyboard which also swung it razers way.

I agree the MX518 its not the nicest looking thing in the world, but seeing as my hand is on it 99% of the time when I'm on the PC its not an issue. Its a good size, tracking is great, nice software, plenty of buttons..
and plus Logitech probably has the single best after sales you could ever ask for. Drop your mouse in your coffee, throw it again the wall in a rage when some random molatovs your whole group on the finale. Send them an email, tell them its "broken" and they normally send you a replacement post haste.

Thing is, after using the MX-518 i can definitely say, if i needed a mouse and could afford the most expensive mouse around, i would probably still go for MX-518 simply because it such a good all round mouse. It looks battered and dented but it just a pattern on the mouse as it smooth and silky . I think when i last checked there was all black edition which had LEDs etc too if your that bothered about the looks
