Looking for a set of gaming headphones + soundcard,

budget 200ish for the both (if i can sell these barracudas :P).

Thanks

Beyerdynamic DT 770 (80ohm) - £85ish
X-Fi music/gamer - £55ish
Clip on / desktop mic - £5-15

770's are considered the best gaming headphones in this price range afaik, they are isolated if this is a problem, and you need to get the 80ohm model if you arnt running it through an amp... should be a really good setup.

Forgive my ignorance but what would be better, these or some Sennheiser 595s which ive heard nothing but praise about?

Thanks

+ What's the difference between the 80Ohm version and the 250Ohm?

+ How do i run it through an amp (what does this mean :P)?

Thanks again.

a lot of high level headphones require additional amplification units, which generally arnt that cheap so best to avoid for gaming.

Sennheiser 595s are good by all accounts however the 770s are superior in gaming department with better bass and soundstaging (hearing movement around you). 595s are less heavy on bass so better for non-bass heavy music, also they improve a lot with amplification.

I was just about to buy the 770's recently but found out they dont excel at low-level listening which I really need, so I'm probably gonna go for Equation Audio RP-21's, but these are very new and not many reviews are up yet.

However you might not want isolation headphones and my research was mainly focused around these so my advice may be a bit limited =) There are a few good headphone forums about I'd check em out yourself tbh so you find exactly what your looking for...

Thanks for the help, not fussed about isolation and the works, only want a pair of headphones that arent disappointing!

These barracuda's were near £100 and i honestly think i get worse sound quality than i did from a £2.50 from an electronics boutique. Stupid surround sound gimmick!

Excellent, finally a gamer convinced that 'gaming headsets with uber 9.3.2.1.1 surround spatial equalizers' are all a load of CACK !

My recommendations are pretty standard as well:

1. Beyer DT770 80 ohm - Very highly regarded for games, loads of bass, and you could power them fine directly from asound card like the creative x-fi !

2. Senn HD595 - probs not the 600's or 650's as they definately need a headphone amp and are not meant for games

3. Audio technica ATH-A900 - Very well regarded too !

Im not sure about amps for these, so get over to head-fi.org and they will sort you out :D

Thanks for the help.

Just two questions though:

What exactly is a headphone amp and how does it work?
Is there a big difference with them? ;\

Cheers

A head phone amp is exactly what it says on the tin. It's an amp for headphones.

The amp will just be another step in the chain from pc sound card to headphones. As previosuly said, if you get a low ohm set of cans you wont need the amplification.

I would reccommend the same as ominousnews and adfinni. Any of those cans mated with a decent sound card or even MP3 player will yield very good results.

Headphones *** :)

(^ edit: haha, I guess I should have know 'For The Win' would have been blocked ;) )

Thanks for the help :P

+ Thats another thing, why is for the win blocked? :P

DUnno, maybe it was used too much a while ago and it annoyed one of the dons :)

O and if you want to save loads of money then just buy the KOSS KSC-75 headphones. THey are clip ons that go over your ears, and everyone at head-fi raves about them. Cost about £12 in the UK or a little less if purchased thru the bay from the USA. Im buying a pair just to recable and mod :D

Anyhow any of those headphones listed will be great, but jsut be warned that some people don't like the senn sound signature as it sounds 'veiled'. I love the grado sound which is very agressive, analytical, and GROOOVY baby :D

Please can someone say how the beyers do non-gaming. I'm looking into these but what are people's experience with music, movies, TV shows etc.

I'm guessing also very nice but would like some opinions. Thanks
