And before we get into the gas vs charcoal this is in addition to a charcoal BBQ I actually have 3 charcoal BBQs but anyway.
I have a pretty old and tired gas BBQ, I have given it a good refurb a year or two back, but it's leaking gas from the metal joints and pretty badly corroded in places, it's at least 10 years old so not had a bad run.
I'm looking for as much of a direct replacement as possible. The BBQ has one large long and thin burner, and a simple metal grill over, it uses butane.
I have converted it slightly by resting a metal mesh on top of the burner to place lava bricks on, and the grill goes over that. It's so the food doesn't get that direct heat from the flame, more of a radiated heat plus the fat drips and burns on the coals giving the food a slightly more smoky taste.
The grill size or cooking area is say just big enough to place 2 spatchcocked chickens on, I'm not after anything larger. It has a lid.
So to summarise, really I'm after a relatively simple gas BBQ, it would need to run on butane though.
Edit: a quick Google suggests you can use butane on pretty much any BBQ even if it's sold to use propane.
EDIT 2: Here is a photo of the current one
