Budget around 250, will be playing games at 1080p.

Don't really care on Nvidia or AMD.

Just best bang for buck within this budget. At the moment got a hd7850.

Cheers.

New or 2nd hand? Either way, wait until new nvidia cards come out. this will drive down both new and used prices. should be able to get a 980 or 390x for that money second hand.

Well, Polaris is launching in two weeks time (roughly) so I would wait if I were you. Even if you aren't planning on buying a new generation graphics card you are likely to get a better deal on the previous generation ones after the launch of Polaris.

The new cards are arriving soon, so that may drive the prices of the older ones down a little.

If buying right now, then either the R9 390 or GTX970 have cards within your budget & will be a very good upgrade from your 7850 - which I hope you had a go at overclocking? ;)

My choices would probably be narrowed down to these (cost in mind as well as other factors), but there are cheaper within each range:

Wait till the end of the month. Silly time to buy a current card right now unless you absolutely have to.

Wait 2 or 3 weeks for new releases and info on AMD releases as they're in your budget so will affect current gen prices as well as the secondhand market.

Erm, spec you a card, well i would spec it at 5ghz clock, around 20 - 50 billion transistors give or take a few million. 8000 SP's and plenty of cache for them. erm... about 32GB of HBM3 memory or some shizzle like it. erm... 7nm process using stanene transistors and a graphene backplane. :P

being realistic I would wait till the end of the month for the new AMD cards to drop, should give you a lot of performance for your pennies.

Hopefully you could get a 980/390x for under £300 once new cards are out. I don't think as cheap as £250 though.

the 970/390 are already in your budget... so maybe this is one of those rare instances where you should just buy now? Depends whether your budget is a gift or savings or what.
