I have an ancient Acoustic Solutions amp, puts out about 40W RMS @ 4 ohms IIRC. It's old hat but I like it, nice clean crisp sound.

Just need left and right, not 17.1

Budget unlimited, but I don't want to be paying fortunes more than necessary for gold plated diamond encrusted connectors or such crap.

I want quality heirlooms that I can pick up and beat a burglar to death with if need be, not tinny blinged out hairdryers that explode when I crank my terrible awesome taste in music up to torture the kids.

All suggestions welcomed, thanks. :)

Budget: unlimited is a very dangerous phrase to use near hi-fi enthusiasts...

Bookshelf or floorstanders? How big is your room? What are your current speakers and what don't you like about them?

I'm an old man and my wife is forgiving... ;)

Don't care about size, I can make accommodations.

I just don't want to be listening to square waves.

Last speakers I had were B&O units. Hefty but not quite up to the job. They got chucked out by mistake in a house move.

Room in question is about 5m sq. Ceiling is quite low, about 2m, it's a barn conversion. My eyes aren't what they once were but I can still hear a pin drop at 100m.

Wow, thanks or the suggestions!

Wharfdale Diamond 9.1's, finally retiring mine as wife is not so forgiving :D

These look good, first Google hit got me them for £100. Amp only has L/R outputs though, will they work?

I quite like my Rega Ela MK2's - took me a few months trawling eBay and the like to find a pair come up though.

I love the Blakes7 look of these things, but they seem to have flimsy feet. Surely a speaker needs anchored mass?

When you say 5m sq, I guess you mean 5m x 5m.

What are the qualities you want from a speaker.

1. Size
2. Weight
3. Loudness
4. Sound quality

what sort of music do you listen to?

It sounds like you want floor standing speakers rather than smaller speakers on stands right?

When you say "I just don't want to be listening to square waves" do you mean you want a nice detailed sound but with an analogue feel. i.e no sharp high frequencies?

If price is not an issue, then it would make sense to consider a new amp/system as well, rather than buying expensive speakers to go with cheap old amp. 40W @4ohms is pretty weedy. You need to match carefully to avoid blowing up the amp (and the speakers).

OK, in approximate order...

Yes, about 5m^2.

#1. I like it big.
#2. I like it heavy.
#3. I like it loud when needed, but I don't need to blow the roof off.
#4. My hearing is pretty good I think for an old fart. I'd rather have fidelity than volume for the sake of volume.

I am a bit embarassed to be too specific, but let's call it rock...?

Floor standing (possibly bolted down) is good. I'm into brick-poophouse bodgery.

Square waves - I can hear clipping, drives me nuts. Well, mildly annoys me anyway. I could write an essay here but hopefully you know what I mean... speaker doesn't have the grunt to accomodate the incoming signal, you get flat-topped noise instead of what the artist intended.

You're right, I could up the amp, but me and the wife like it and it has some sentimental value to her. Plus it's built like a Massey Fergusson.

Monitor Audio gold series, or, if you are truly serious about budget unlimited, the Platinum II's. Laws of diminishing returns applies with Hi Fi though. You'll need to look at your amplification, source and cabling to get the best out of any medium to high end speaker.

My most coherent opinion of these is, "oooh, oooh, oooh." :) Seriously tempted. Very seriously.

what is the source material, cd vinyl streamed?

All of the above, but mostly high bitrate mp3 and flac files. The wife has a collection of vinyl but TBH they rarely get taken out of their sleeves.

These are by no means weedy and you'd need to remortgage to buy them. You'd need 2 good quality mono blocks too - http://jordanacoustics.co.uk/products/amplifiers/mc2kw-monoblocks/

*wholly unsuitable for your room of course.

Those things are so fekkin ugly I'm in love with them. I could stand beside one and look like a Greek god by comparison. Those monoblocks quite frankly turn me on, and that's not a picture you want in your head, apologies. I now want these things. :(

Cabling is mostly snake oil. 2.55mm squared and anything more is pointless.

£35 for 30m off amazon

Agreed. :)

What I was thinking about was solid wood, oak or mahogany, good craftsmanship, durability.

So far the Monitor Audio Gold's are swaying me.

If you like big and heavy, look at the likes of used celestion Ditton 66, kef concerto or 104aB, wharfedale E90, tannoy monitor gold or super red monitors.

For modern new speakers that are on the large side, I'd look at spendor classic and the tannoy dc series or the gold reference series. For a more limited budget, tannoy, kef, wharfedale, monitor audio etc all do a fair range.

Thanks! :)

Oops forgot to give my suggestion.

You could do worse than some Q Acoustics - either the 3020 (bookshelf, £200) or 3050 (floorstander £500) are good choices.

My old man got himself some 3020s for Xmas and they are very good if positioned correctly (too close to a wall makes them very muddy being backported). They're reassuringly heavy too. ;) (4.6 kg each, over twice the weight of a Wharfedale 9.0 for those wondering.)

Will check these out, thank you! :)

Bad thread. Budget and get down to your local Hi-Fi specialist. Without fail if you are actually going to spending £1k+ on speakers, unfortunately your earlier reply regarding the Kef £20k speakers makes it very hard to know if this is actualy a serious thread if you then consider sub £1k speakers :s

Yeah I knew the "budget unlimited" thing would annoy some folk. I said it deliberately for the following reasons:
#1. I really am an old fart with some cash to burn.
#2. Some things I have expertise in. Audio is not one of them, so I wanted pointers to what's out there, and the replies so far have been very helpful and have pointed me in some directions that I would not otherwise have considered.

I've tried to make it clear a few times ITT that I value sane engineering and quality materials over sheer noise output. I know my amp is a bit crap...

His £80 Argos special amplifier isn't going to drive half the speakers people are suggesting let alone sound good.

Quite a few folk have expressed similar opinions. I am taking them on board as best I can.

Me and the wife are having an outing this weekend. We will come to the salesmen armed with research very helpfully provided by you lot of wonderful nutters, thank you all, it's very much appreciated. :)
