My R9 290 Tri-X died after having it for 3 years and I'm now looking for a card to replace it which I only game at 1080p with max settings and 2 or 4x AA depending on the game.

I have a budget of £300 for a used/new card but I can push it if I need to for better performance for the money.

honestly I'd look at the 980 Ti for £359 at 1080p that WILL last you a very long time! look at the zotac one with 5 years warranty or the Asus strix with 3 years as at 1080p expect to have this card for years to come! since you had a 290 even a 980 wouldn't be a massive upgrade whereas the Ti is an absolute monster!

And just think of the games coming out in the near future.
Battlefield 1
Dead rising 4
resident evil 7
at least they're games I'm really looking forward too :D

under 300£ you can get sapphire Nitro 480 for 250£, i wouldn't get 970/980 for the memory and DX12 games down the road.
if you can stretch for 360£ to get a 980Ti, you might as well stretch another 30£ get a 1070 for 389£

Can you hold few weeks until the Sapphire RX480 Nitro OC comes out?
It will be £249.95, and much faster than most of the card proposed above, especially in DX12.

And stay away from GTX970/980. They ain't worth the money, and do not buy any of them second hand for more than £120. Simply they just do not worth the money.

I would want to see reviews before recommending the 480 Nitro, I think that it is going to be the best 1080p card - but we don't know yet, if you can wait a couple of weeks I would get one if the reviews are good.

I love my 970. For any resolution below 1440p it's a great card. I've noticed that I am getting better frames with my 3570k clocked to 4.5Ghz than I was at stock. Which shows you how powerful the card is.

There are some great deals on at the moment on the 970 series.

I think it really depends what you want to do. If you did get a 1070 to do it justice your need a 1440p or higher monitor.

Alternatively 390 or 390x.

I'm not sure about 480. I don't like it's cheap and tacky look and I'm more green team anyway.

Nvidia are rumoured to release details about the 1060 on the 7th (tomorrow), so I think it'd be worth waiting until then.

You can get the MSI GTX970 for £250, im partial to the MSI frozr coolers as they're good and quiet.
Going from a 290 to a 970 seems like a downgrade to be honest and £200+ for a 970 is a no no for me.

My mate is selling his MSI 980 Ti for £260 with 2 years warranty left as he has upgraded to a 1080, should I go for it?

I know the 980 Ti will last for years at 1080p gaming but what about drivers support down the line maybe 2-3 years time?

I don't know how good the RX 480 is but how does it compare to a 980 Ti?

I have read the 1060 thread and the performance seems to be 980 level?

Yeah, anybody seriously advising to get a crippled 3.5GB 970 brand new right now must be permanently attached to NVIDIA imo. 8GB 480 is more capable with future games. Both are quite a side grade from a 290 though.

Bite ones arm off, you'll be laughing with 1080p performance for that money.

I know the 980 Ti will last for years at 1080p gaming but what about drivers support down the line maybe 2-3 years time?

Don't worry about it, even if the 1070 gets a 10fps lead over the 980Ti with more optimised drivers in a years time, you will still be laughing at 1080p for well over £100 less.

If you were at a more demanding resolution I would start to consider the slight performance gap Pascal might get with drivers focusing more on the 1070/1080.

I don't know how good the RX 480 is but how does it compare to a 980 Ti?

980Ti is almost as fast as two 480s in crossfire, so quite a jump really.

I have read the 1060 thread and the performance seems to be 980 level?

Pretty much spot on, this will be a big jump for some people on lesser cards, but coming from a 290 the 980Ti would be a much greater boost.

With BF1 and DR4 supporting DX12, you'll be wanting an RX 480 and Async, trust me. :)

EDIT

Fair point Greg. OP, As you have a 290 a 480 is not a huge upgrade.

C'mon guys, the OP is coming from a 290 and the 480 isn't any faster in reality.

OP, go for your mates 980Ti and for £260 with 2 years left on the warranty, it would be a very wise buy :)
