i have now built a new system apart for the graphics card which i am going to wait for the gt300 series.

for now though, i am going to buy a cheap nvidia graphics card just so i can use the system.

i want to get a cheap card which i can also then keep as a physx card once the gt300's are out.

im looking to spend no more than about £90 and was looking at 9800, 9600 or one of those new 40nm new ones that have just come out.

thank you for your advice in advance.

If your just buying a card to tide you over then I'd find the cheapest 9800GT or even source a second hand 8800GT - they are still very capable cards.

ok i think ill go for the 9800gt.

there is a green edition which requires no power connector from your PSU and obviously one which does.

will the green edition be as good though as it doesnt require power cable??

I'd be a bit wary if your planning on using it as a physx card down the line... its possible on setups with several discrete cards connected might not be able to share enough power to all the PCI-e slots.

the only things ill have in the pci slots are the main graphics card and the physx card.
ive not got a sound card or wireless internet pci so it should be ok. also using an 850w psu.

I to aim thiking of getting a cheap cared to cover to the GF300 as i cring at the thaught of having to go to ATI :(. Then hopefully donate it to my current pc when i get the GF300 if my motherboard can use them as its only PCI E 16x and not 2.0.

Are these cards downwards compatable do you know ?. my current MB is a Asus M2N32 WS Professional with a 7950 GT willl the 9800 work in it ?.

PhysX is dead, heck most new games will use OpenCL or DirectX 11 that includes DirectCompute and NVDIA is EviL, when they disable PhysX when a ATI card is in the system, NVIDIA even disables a dedicated NON-NVIDIA PPU aka the old Ageida PhysX cards when a ATI card is in the system

btw i dont know of any GOOD games with PhysX do you?, one example is batman the rest is crappy or only has ONE map that supports it

ATI 5800 series is the best now, get one of them, best value and futureproof

any PCI Express 2.0 card with work with PCI Express and the other way around

There are a few recent(ish) games that use physx such as

Batman: Arkham Asylum
Crazy Machines II
Cryostasis
Dark Void
Darkest of Days
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2
Metal Knight Zero Online
Mirror's Edge
Nurien
PT Boats
Sacred 2
Star Tales
Unreal Tournament 3
Unreal Tournament 3: Extreme Physics Mod
U-WARS
Warmonger: Operation Downtown Destruction

Pulled from NVidia site, on wiki theres loads but not so many recent top games, so i agree aswell physx is dying out especially with the release of Direct X11

Don't be too quick to bang the physx is dead drum... theres a reason it has more of a following than havok despite havok being technically superior...

oh dear, shouldn't ever mention the P word. brings out the trolls.

on an auction website i saw some 260's going for sub £100. should be able till the 300 range comes out.
