Spec me a handheld GPS.

Technically it can be used as a global positioning system.

Are you joking? I can't believe that anyone could ask such an incredibly vague question.

What is your budget?
For what do you what to use a handheld GPS?

If you've already got a smartphone made within the past few years then the chances are that you could use a navigation app on that. If it wouldn't be suitable or you want something more specific then it would be useful if you could answer the questions stockhausen posed.

A phone, really?

Learn to use a compass and map. You can use something like a Garmin eTrek as aback up but using a compass and map properly will see you good.

my smartphone works great apart from on some roads my trail looks like im drunk and swerving about a bit, seems to be accurate to 5ft or so

In the absence of any more details it may be perfectly suitable, I wouldn't necessarily want to use it every day in place of a proper GPS system but for occasional use a smartphone can do a reasonable job or at least both my previous Nokia and current Motorola do.

Sure but I'm never going to trust a smartphone when I'm well off the beaten track. I assume that somebody asking for a handheld GPS is not going to just want to use the one in their phone.

It is the 21st century. A popular device known as a "mobile phone" is prevalent, many of which incorporate GPS antennas into the design.

Strife uses sarcasm. It's not very effective.

See above, I wound not want to rely on a dedicated handheld GPS if I was out in the wilds of the UK never mind a bloody smartphone. A decent gps used in conjunction with a map and compass is fine. A phone is not. If the OP just wants to find his way to the shops then I'm sure I smartphone would be great...

why cant a gps smart phone work off the beaten track? they rely on satelites to be accurate just like regular handheld gps and aslong as your maps are accurate you wont have a problem.

most of the apps seem to use google maps and let you switch between terrain mode etc like the normals webpage version does

Neither would i, i would take a map as well as my phone :)

Anyway, the OP hasnt told us what he wants it for yet, there are many different uses for a "GPS"

You're right in that I wouldn't want to be relying on any GPS in an absolute sense and especially not a mobile phone based solution but since the OP hasn't clarified their requirements I thought I'd start with an obvious solution which they may already have and then if that wasn't suitable at least we'd have worked out a bit more about what they do need.
