Criteria

Budget £8000
Less than 40,000 miles
Preferably less than 4 years old
5 doors
1.4-1.6L Petrol

I will be doing no more than 10k a year.

I have my heart set on a Peugeot 308 but reading reviews on it says the car is pretty crap.

Out of the following cars which would you choose:

Peugeot 308
Ford Fiestia (09)
Fiat Punto
Vauxhaul Corsa
VW Golf
VW Polo

If I didn't go with the 308 I probably would go with a Golf/Polo. What do you guys reckon and have I overlooked some other cars?

If its your first car dont spend £8k on a crap car with a crap engine. Spend loads less and then when you can insure something decent, spend the rest of your money on something good.

ditto this.
sfter a year under your belt you'll have learnt loads and done damage to a crap worthless car instead of a decent one...

Something by Seat perhaps?

Budget £8000 - Yup, well under.
Less than 40,000 miles - Yup
Preferably less than 4 years old - 4 years old, not less than.
5 doors - Yup
1.4-1.6L Petrol - Yup

If it was me I'd spend less on an older car, even the car I linked to is a bit more than I'd spend, you could get something a bit older with a few more miles for £2k less

The odds are you'll own it for a year or two and get bored and buy something a bit better. In the time you've got it, it's unlikely to cost a great deal more in repairs due to the age or mileage. Same goes for pretty much all the cars that meet your requirements (and most cars in general) you can save a large amount by buying a few years older.

You've got £8000 to spend on your first car and your worrying about insurance!!

 What are you talking about? Of course he is, considering new driver insurance is nothing short of insane (£2k+). Many new drivers pay more on their insurance than what their car is actually worth.

Stop regurgitating quotes from threads where someone asks about £30k M5's then decides against it because the tax costs a bit more.

Ibiza would be a good shout. Could get a half decent one, pay for insurance & road tax and still have a few £k to save.
I know this isn't what you want to hear, but honestly, if you're new to driving, get a rubbish car. I had a 1998 1.4 Corsa for 12months. Bought it for £250, it did roughly 38mpg, didn't cost me a penny for 12k miles, then I sold it for £500. I scraped it a good few times, and bumpers took a few knocks, but that's what first cars are for!

Treat yourself after the first year! I have now have a Leon FR now, and loving it!

I agree with this.

Nonsense - engine size is only a small contibuting factor to insurance, dont set arbitrary limits for yourself

And this, to an extent.

Try getting some quotes with higher powered cars, you may be surprised. For example, I found insurance quotes on a Mazda 6 2.0 TS2 only £200 more to insurance than a Seat Ibiza 1.2 (after 1 year of driving). Just make sure you get quotes on a range of different cars and don't limit yourself.

Seriously take the advice in this thread. Any car you get as your first one will feel fun to drive. My first car was a 1.9D 1999 Clio with a whopping 63bhp. Terrible, but I enjoyed it for the first year until I learnt how to drive "properly". Plus in a year's time you'll know what you want from a car and be better poised to spend your money correctly.

Also from you're name I assume you work for BAE. As a fellow employee I don't want you to waste your money;)
