As title says I'm in training at the moment to do a charity bike ride (C2C) in august I currently have the worst bike in the world and doing 50 miles on it on the weekends isnt fun and therefore im looking to replace it. It will be used for commuting also once the C2C is completed. I dont have a fixed budget as Ill be getting it through the Cycle to Work Scheme although I dont want to go nuts. Although even after the C2C i plan on weekend rides but probablys nothing in excess of 40 miles.

So to sum up.

New Bike prefer hybrids never rode a road bike but the riding position looks uncomfortable to me and dont think it will suit the trail paths at the end of the C2C.

Cost less then £1000 prefer less then £750 but will stretch for the ideal bike.

Also what accessories should i get im thinking :-
Helmet
Camelback
Tools (allan keys/multitool/pump/chain tool)
Spares (inner tubes/Chain links)
anything im missing from here?

Thanks

I think you should at least try sitting on a road bike first. it's lower at the front, so it stretches your back a bit more but I still find it a lot more comfortable over longer distances because the drop bars give a lot more positions to put your hands in and you can move around when your arms and hands are getting tired/sore.

I could test one out but I just cant see how it would be suitable for the rides that im looking at doing, some parts of the C2C and where i ride locally are bridal paths pretty much meaning they can be pretty rough in parts, I think that something with lock out suspension would be good for my requirments, but i also want something that is light and is a good climber and fast on roads hence a hybrid I think would be the best choice.

I know the C2C is easily doable on a road bike but I have a feeling a road bike may be a bit too fragile for my needs heck im not even bothered if the bike doesnt have any suspension as I doubt its really needed just I'm a bit wary about the durability of road bikes.
