Hello!

I've been riding a 30 year old Raleigh mountain bike for a VERY long time (it was my dad's before it was mine), and it's had several sets of tyres, several services, but all the parts are pretty much original. The back wheel wobbles a lot which I think means the bearings on the back wheel have gone, the chain slips quite regularly when pedalling hard, frame's dented and knackered, and I've been thinking for a long time that it's time for a change. It's still got the original chain, sprockets pedals and brake pads. I've put a set of mudguards on it to prevent me getting plastered in the rain, but generally speaking, it's gone a very long time with very little help.

Riding down the end of my street today, the pedal flew off halfway across a busy road because the crank itself actually snapped, and it's finally pushed me in to making a decision to get something new.

I ride primarily to the gym and back on cycle track, but I do take my children for bike rides, so would be doing gravely stuff as well. Unlikely I'll ever do any actual trail riding / mountain biking. I'd say 8 miles a week all year round is me riding to the gym. Most of the routes I ride aren't very hilly, my current bike has 18 gears and seemed fine.

I'd like:
- Lightweight because I have to lift my bike and 2 others on to a roof rack on the roof of a Tiguan, and it's really awkward if the bike is mega heavy.
- Good brakes - Hydraulic would be nice.
- Not bothered with clippy pedals or anything, I just ride in trainers.
- Ideally fewer quick release things because I lock my bike up outside the gym with a D lock and I'd like to come back to it intact.
- Budget is variable, but as I leave it in vulnerable places like outside shops (albeit locked up) and gyms, sometimes in the dark, I'd rather not spend the earth. No more than £700 I think.

I quite liked the Boardman MTX 8.6 so I'd imagine something similar to this, though it doesn't seem to drop below £600 most of the time. The lowest I've seen that one drop is around £550 with vouchers / discounts etc.

Any thoughts are appreciated, thank you!

I opted for the Boardman HYB 8.6 in the end, as I got a fairly sizable discount through the wife's work scheme + cashback, and got the chance to sit on it and make sure I had the right frame size and pose a few questions. Hopefully should be with me middle of the week. I'm using my wife's old MTB in the mean time for gym and out and about stuff anyway, and it feels like riding a tiny clown bike where it's so small, but it gets me about!

I'm not too worried about the resale, as I tend to keep them a while. This is what happened to the last one:
