Spec me a Joystick

Ok, so I'm looking for a Joystick. At the moment it's mainly to play Descent 1 - 3 and Privateer 2: The Darkening. Possibly for Freespace and Wing Commander 4 in the future.

I have a pretty limited budget here (due to a wedding in the not so distant future) so I'm looking at spending £30 at the very very maximum. Although the cheaper the better. I'm looking for something that "performs well for the money" best bang for buck joystick you could say.

So far I'm considering the

Saitek Cyborg Evo
Logitech 3D Pro
and the wallet friendly Saitek ST30

Anyone used these? Or any other suggestions?

I have the wireless version of the Saitek and quite like it, nice and adjustable even for left/right handed. Only really use it for flying jets in BF2 but it seems to work well.

My flat mate has the Logitech one and though I've not really used it I'd probably prefer the Saitek.

Like I say though I'm not really a hardcore stick user.

Both of those are normally available in a high street store, so see if you can get down there for a 'hands on' and see which one feels right. Though obviously they are cheaper on line.

I've got a really old Saitek and it's damn nice. Quite similar to the Evo in design. I've not felt the need to replace it since I bought it in 2002 or so.

I wish. The only stick I have been able to find around here is the Logitech 3D Pro at £30 in *****. But none on display. And the Logitech Force 3D Pro in ******, again fully boxed up, nothing on display. Its £xx!

I've had the Force 3D Pro for a few years (mostly used in X-Wing games!) and it's a good joystick; solidly built with decent, regularly updated software. The force feedback is fully controllable and goes from very weak to quite strong and the Logitech software allows you to create custom set ups for each game which will automatically launch when the game does.

From my point of view it's easy to recommend as the only Saitek I've had broke within one month of purchase!

Just a warning before a mod has to warn you properly or anything more serious, avoid mentioning competitors by name, even when you're talking about how suck they are :)

Im thinking I might go for the Saitek Cyborg Evo. However I've seen some MS Sidewinder Precision 2 joysticks going real cheap. Always liked the Sidewinder joysticks. Anyone know if there are any issues using them in Vista?

Yes. Links removed.

Although I don't see what the big deal is myself. Everyone knows about other online retailers and surely no one buys blind without checking prices elsewhere. But anyway, don't want to go breaking the rules.

I agree but it's OCUK's forum and hence OCUK's rules :)

Have to be carefull with the Evo Force, I have one, and after about an hour of using it I have to take it apart and reset some of the sensors, as the yaw sensor has been designed badly.
Other than that, great fun.

Mentioning them isn't the bad thing, but if they allowed competitors to be discussed freely it would lead to discussions of "where is the cheapest place to get XXX piece of hardware". You can understand them not wanting that in here ;).

Hmmm, I guess so. I wasn't moaning as such anyway. And the links were not to point out the cost as all the sticks can be had cheaper elsewhere.

It appears the Logitech 3D Pro can be head pretty cheap on certain auction sites. So I'll probably go for that one.
