Hi

Building my first PC and just remembered I need a keyboard! :D

I have a basic wireless mouse that uses one of them small usb receivers, guessing I will want something similar or do you think I should get a wired keyboard?

Want something cheap and relatively basic, and preferably small as my PC is not at a desk.

Thanks

Budget?

It's up to you if you want wireless or not.

Keychron is the go-to for budget keyboards that are good and the K series is most people's first dip into mechanical keyboards. Most cheap keyboards are poor.

I'm a huge fan of the Nuphy range buuut they are US based and ANSI format only and expensive once specced up and shipped over here.

Didn't have a budget in mind, under £100 though.

Its mainly for msfs, so doesn't need to be anything special, I might just go for a cheap Logitech plug and play keyboard/mouse, seen some for about £16.

I went with a Keychron V1 Max (UK ISO) and am mostly happy with it.

You can either use it wired or wireless, but i have mine wired.

I did change the switches to silent ones though as i some times type late at night or very early morning.

Be aware though if you want to change keycaps, choices are limited for UK ISO. (why i am mostly happy with it)

Have a look at the Keychron site as you can easily get a good keyboard there for less than £100.

I just got a cheap Logitech Mk270 keyboard/mouse set for £16, should cover me for now, I may invest in something better down the line, although its only going to be used for basic windows functions and mostly MSFS. I will use my xbox pad for most gaming.

I use a ROG Azoth. Expensive but by far the best keyboard ive ever used and has been in daily use now for just over a year.
Glad you're enjoying it.

I hate to say this, though, as I used to consider £200 expensive for a keyboard but even that now is midrange for a keyboard :(

I'm too cheap to spend the money on a brand new expensive keyboard when I can pick one up used that's heavily discounted though.

Plouffe over on LTT has spent insane amounts on keyboards ontop of getting a whole bunch of high end ones for free via working for LTT (he sort of adopts the really exepensive niche ones for his own use as far as I can tell) and when you're dealing with a milled brass chassis, the price quickly escalates past $500/£500.

Yes, think I paid about £220 at the time. Its a solid keyboard but appreciate there are specialist options out there now going into insane price brackets.

People will gawk at spending more than £15 on a keyboard but when you're infront of your PC for the majority of the day, a nice keyboard and mouse, even if they are expensive, can be very worth while.

I picked up a used Nuphy Halo 65 with the wrist rest and extra see through keycaps for I think £85 back in 2021 which was an absolute bargain.

I love my Nuphy so much that I'm happy to pay full retail for one if this one failed me now, even if it cost me £200 all in.

I agree, sit at my PC every day so why cheap out on the peripherals! Same goes for the chair and desk (Herman Miller Aeron and a secret lab desk for me).

Used to spend no money on keyboards and just used the free dell ones. I then bought a Keychron V3 and have never looked back.

Keychron are basically the keyboard version of a gateway drug - once you get one, you realise how good it can be and start to chase the dragon of the perfect key switch and perfect key caps. Dangerous stuff.

Thankfully for me I didn't catch the bug, I bought some cheap switches off aliexpress and a nice looking set of SA profile keycaps, but got so bored swapping them out I knew I wouldn't want to do it again if I didn't have to.
