Sadly My beloved 1st gen Microsoft natural keyboard seems to have died (I may yet attempt to resurrect her but for now I am having to consider a replacement)

Now, I have always maintained that while the Machine is important, the interface is critical! So I have always gone for top quality "Human Interfaces" so I am not afraid to spend money on the right stuff as long as it does the job and lasts well.

I am not a keyboard gamer as such (I prefer Joy/Trackball) but I am still after a good keyboard and I suspect that a Mechanical type may be more to my taste. I also quite like the idea of back lighting and the possibility of replacing keys (Though as I said, I am not a keyboard gamer as such, It still might help to be able to highlight certain keys)

There seems to be a huge choice out there and was wondering if anybody had any suggestions.

As I said at the beginning, I consider keyboard to be "Important" to the overall PC experience(Especially since my hands are beginning to get a bit arthritic! :( ) so am prepared to spend serious money on the right product!

Best thing to do is find some kind of PC shop in your local area and try to "demo" some of the different types of keys.

Most important thing to do if you're getting a mechanical keyboard is decide which kind of "switch" you're most comfortable with. Check the stickies on this subforum as rjkonell's got an excellent guide that details the different types of key to go for and what kind of feel/response they give.

Some are more suited for gamers over heavy typers and vice versa. Then once you've decided on the kind of switches you like then your possible shopping list becomes a bit more manageable and it's just down to deciding what kind of keyboard you like that has your chosen switches

It would be helpful to state some preferences.

Wired/Wireless?
Low Profile(laptop style keys) or Chunky(regular style) keys?
Ergonomic or just regular box shaped?
Backlit required or just a bonus?
Budget (just roughly is fine)?

I have a Logitech G710+, and one of the many things I like about it, is that the WASD and arrow keys can have their backlighting adjusted separately to the rest of the kb.
