Have a logitech but its been around for about 5 years now. It's gotten pretty noisy which is a problem as the PC is in the bedroom and I often want to game when the mrs wants to sleep. Want to get a keyboard which is as quiet as possible but doesnt lose its gamability. I dont need any media buttons or anything like that as I mainly play FPS.

Budget is £30 for now but happy to spend more depending on choices

ok..since there are no suggestions - could it just be that my current keyboard (i think its a dome keyboard) is just old and any kind of key dampening has long since gone? Is it just a case of get a new keyboard..any keyboard, and it will be quieter that what I have?

If you just want any old keyboard and at a £30 limit, I'd personally just nip up the local 'mainstream PC shop' and try out all the 'boards in the budget (non-gamer) section until I found one that seemed suitable.

If you have a budget like that, there's not a whole lot of choice.
dome keys are dome keys really and that's all you'll get in the price.

What are you meaning by 'gotten noisy'? was it an acceptable volume before and makes more noise now?

there wasnt a need for it to be quiet before as before we moved the PC was in a different room to the bed. This is sadly not an option any more

happy to spend more on a keyboard

As mentioned, try some out. Take SWMBO with you and let her judge.
Try some of the 'flat key' types, like you see on laptops and Netbooks, as the keys travel much less so may make less noise when you're typing/playing... and then buy the loudest mechanical keyboard you can - just beacuse, heh heh!!

But yeah, do try some out and see what she thinks.
Do you have an über-quiet mouse already?

As it happens no - it's just a Razer. That's not quiet either but apparently that's not the problem...

So... she's kept awake by the muffled, irregular tap of your WASD keys and spacebar, but *not* by the frantic CLICKY-CLICKY-CLICKY-CLICKY-CLICKY-CLICKY-CLICKY-CLICKY-CLICKY-CLICKY-CLICKY-CLICKY-CLICKY-CLICKY-CLICKY-CLICKY-CLICKY-(R to reload)-CLICKY-CLICKY-CLICKY-CLICKY-CLICKY-CLICKY-CLICKY-CLICKY-CLICKY-CLICKY-CLICKY-CLICKY-CLICKY-CLICKY-CLICKY-CLICKY-CLICKY sound that comes from unloading a semi-auto pistol in your FPSes, then?:D

Also: £30 for a keyboard... £1 for a twin-pack of earplugs at most high-street music shops... ;):p

I take the mick, but my own is just the same!

How about this, get a Corsair K65 and some O-ring dampers. I hope I didn't misread that the budget had raised slightly as this will be around £80.

Good thing is, it's a solid keyboard and as it uses Red switches it'll quieter than the rest and with the dampers it'll be quieter still!

Even stick a mouse mat under the keyboard to further dampen the sound.
