My wife will be the main user and she's disabled so it has to be light - no more than 2.5kilos, and preferably less. I'm aware that light = pricey, but our budget doesn't extend to the top end of the price scale, no more than £700.

We would like to be able to check out the machines in-store before buying, as it's amazing how machines of the same weight feel as though they're different! So any recommendation must be available on the highstreet (the usual stores plus one other rival that has a branch locally.)

It's going to be used for surfing the net, emails, and lots of video chatting on MSN, so it'll need excellent battery life. It will also be used for watching DVDs, and I want to be able to burn DVDs directly. So it must have a DVDRW and a reasonably good screen.

It'll be used literally as a lap-top, so it needs to be something that runs quite cool.

Although our house is fully wired-LAN'd up, it will also need wireless for when it's used in the garden, preferably built in, but I have got a USB wireless adapter anyway.

Also, if it's shared graphics memory I want it to have at least 768Mb so after the share it's still got 512Mb for XP, cause my mates laptop with 512Mb runs like a pig once the graphics card's taken its 128Mb. I wouldn't mind the ability to play games on it like Doom3/Quake4, but I also know that's out of my price bracket too! But the best graphics card for the price please!

Would prefer if it had a 7200rpm HDD instead of 5200/5400prm, but I know that's probably out of the question as well!

Not fussed whether it's AMD or Intel....

So what would you guys recommend?

Cheers.

How about a used Powerbook or iBook 12"?

You could even stretch a bit and get a brand new MacBook 13" dual core for 750 GBP including VAT. Shipping's free in the UK as well. If you're a student you can get extra discounts from that price as well.

EDIT: Quoting Apple's student discount prices in this post probably constitutes discussion of OcUK competitors. Suffice it to say that you can get a real quick machine for way less than you've budgeted.

macbooks run ridiculously hot though - you would not be able to really comfortably put it on your lap.

So i take it by that comment that you own one?

I have a MacBook, and it's fine, it doesn't get to hot for your lap at all.

They sit at around 65c, which is hot, but then they are silent, and it's really not a problem. Just buy one :) It'll be fine. You might notice it's quite hot on your legs, but only if you use your laptop whilst naked, which i doubt you do :p

The Samsungs are too heavy - the lightest is 2.7Kg, I don't want anything above 2.5, and preferably lighter. It might not seem much, but for my wife it will make a big difference. As regards temps, it must run cool. Like I said, my wife is disabled and the heat will not be good for her legs.

Without going into details, she is very temperature sensitive and does not have a great deal of muscle strength or stamina, hence the cool and light reuqirements.

The Dell at £731 and Macbook for £750 are both over budget (budget is not negotiable - £700 is the absolute max.)

Not fussed about having non-gaming graphics, it would just be a nice to have (so when my mates come round we have LAN a bit of Quake etc without having to lug systems about :) ) but it's not the main use of the system.

Any other ideas?

I would try the travelmates if going for a light Acer...
