Looking for a laptop while I'm going to be off sick.

I'd like something reasonably good looking (would get a Mac but I have a MBP that work have given me), looking for decent spec, latest technology. Reasonably mobile, decent battery life.

Basically a decent all round machine.

About £500 to spend, I assume an i5 and 4GB Ram is doable?

What else should I be looking for?

No gaming will be done on it, movies, music, web surfing, emails, office, remote desktop and that sort of usual stuff will be done on it.

Oh a decent trackpad is key, I'm use to a MBP where you can use two fingers to scroll, three to move back and forward etc and it's brilliant. The latest Acer's do this (terribly) but it would be an added bonus.

your budget is too low if you want that mbp feel and track pad.

consider an hp probook or lenovo thinkpad edge, you should be able to get an i5 if you are happy with integrated graphics. there are some bargain 2010 models about but this means 1st gen i5 with the gma HD graphics. you may as well try to get the gen 2 i5 with HD3000 graphics or a 1st gen with dedicated graphics simply because in this budget you can do, although if you aren’t gaming you don't need too.

there are a whole variety of acers in this budget too including the 5750g i3 with GT540

I know the budget is too low for proper MBP feel etc.... hoping to get as close as possible.

This laptop will never be used for gaming at all, I have an £1500~ build PC for that at home so this is purely for each of browsing, watching movies, emails, etc......

I'd like to stay away from the Acer's if possible - we purchased 20 of the 57** series and 4 have already failed in one way or another (2 months on) and been back for warranty work or replaced. Doesn't fill me with confidence.

I was thinking aim for the latest i5 (what processor is that?), 4GB RAM, 250GB HDD will be fine (might even pop an SSD in it - that should make a massive difference), and intergrated graphics. The rest - well I just want the nicest looking/feel machine possible.

Don't care for inbuilt webcam or anything like that. 15" screen would be ideal (unless a 13" gets me much better spec, my MBP is 13" and that is perfectly fine and useable. HDMI would be very nice though.

Will look into the HP and Lenovo ones.

Bump - anyone before I go ahead and take a wild stab in the dark?

Looking at the Acer Aspire 5742 laptop:

Intel Core i5-480M 2.66GHz
5GB RAM
500GB HDD
15.6" LCD
DVD Writer
Webcam
Windows 7 Home Premium 64

£463 a good deal?

any reason for that over the newer 5750 ones?

Slightly more expensive and only has 3GB of RAM?

Acer Aspire 5750G
Intel Core i5-2410M 2.3GHz
3GB RAM
640GB HDD
15.6" LED
DVD Writer
Webcam
Windows 7 Home Premium 64

£505~

I do actually have a couple of 2GB RAM modules for laptops kicking about so could boost that to 4GB I guess.

Went for this in the end:

Acer Aspire 5750 Laptop

Intel Core i5-2410M 2.3GHz
8GB RAM
500GB HDD
15.6" LCD
DVD Writer
Webcam
Windows 7 Home Premium 64

£560~ish

Crud inbuilt graphics that I don't care about which is probably why it's cheapish. Battery lasts 4.5 hours apparently which is decent enough and spec looks good.
