Right, I'm just about to buy a Canon 400D in my move to D-SLR from a Canon S3 IS which is now becoming limited with the types of photos I am wanting to take.

I am going to buy one that includes the kit lens, even though it might not be an excellent lens it will be a good base for me begin with for everyday shots.

What I am looking for is an additional lens which has a good focal length (good zoom to me), now I know the canon has a crop factor of x1.6 so a 75-300mm would be ideal I think giving me 480mm at maximum stretch.

3 Lenses I've been looking at are:

* Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III USM Zoom Lens
* Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG Macro (Canon AF)
* Tamron 70-300mm F/4-5.6 LD Macro (Canon AF).

Now I know these lenses are not going to be astounding but I don't want to spend any more that £200 at the moment on one, what I don't understand is why they are classed as macro lenses (my interpritation of macro is close up) when they have a zoom on them, does this just mean they have the macro function as well or that they are for close up work only with a zoom which will only adjust the DOF?

Any help, suggestions or recomendations will be greatly appreciated, thanks guys.

Anyone know a good camera bag to get as well

The best one to get is the Sigma 70-300 APO.

Its not quite the one you posted, its the APO version. The APO version has better glass in it, and is worth if over the non-APO version.

I think most on here would agree that in the VFM stakes at this point it cant be beaten. :)

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think it's the APO "DG" version not the Super Macro "II" version you want. The "DG" is the updated version of the "II", I believe.
True. But if he buys new its gotta be the DG version as thats whats on sale now. If he buys 2nd hand a non-DG will probably be cheaper and there isnt that much difference on quality. :)

So it is definately the SIGMA Lens AF 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO Macro Super II I want to get then as I've searched and this is the only one available when search for Sigma 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 APO DG Macro

* Sigma Lens AF 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO Macro Super II

* Sandisk CompactFlash Extreme III 2 GB

Thanks for the advice guys ;)

Does it matter if the shop says "for pentax cameras"? Would it fit on other cameras such as the 400D?
