I suggest showing your kids Watership Down. It will help them to bond with the rabbits and make them appreciate them more.

It will not mentally scar them especially at such a young age when they are not impressionable.

Goldfish - minimum fuss, just regular water change

my sister and I had 2 goldfish when we were about 4 yrs old - 1 of them lasted 15 years the other 20 years.. they were kept in a 24*12*18 tank with underground filter, gravel, rock and some pond weed + a few snails...
