I want a linux server thats free / cheap that will act as a file server to 15 windows servers. Basically they will need to map a drive to a share on the linux box (they're currently using xp which is limited to 10 connections). The file share will hold a database that they connect to via an app and thats it. I'm not a linux person but I will have to maintain it if required so I'm looking for one that is stable and requires very little maintenance. Also is it easy to create a share and map to it from windows? the network doesnt have a domain so a generic user needs to be granted full permissions to the share... does this make sense?

Depending on your experience, it might be much quicker to use the server version of Ubuntu, can go straight to whatever you want to do.

If you can't manage using only the command line, just use normal Ubuntu :)

thanks Gareth,

Ubuntu is downloaded, will try it tomorrow, this way I can also install it on an old machine and it'll still run :p

I've never had any real need to use Linux but its going to be cheaper than a 2003 licence for my customer and it'll do the same job, its only for file sharing but XP is limited to 10 connections..
