Inverness,
Hey guys, I have recently purchased a 4790k and my current watercooler seems insufficient to to handle it at stock on 80% power (set in windiws power settings).
That and It is a noisy S.O.B. So I am considering a custom loop so I can break myself into the world of overclocking after atleast getting decent idle temps out of the thing.

I am just looking to cool the cpu for the time being. I only have £100 at the moment but I can save more.

So please spec me a low budget setup so I can see what cost im looking at while guaranteeingi dont miss out something. Oh and hopefully you can recommend parts you have used before as I have not had the greatest luck in the silicon lottery these days.

If possible I would also like clear tubing so I can use the rest of my green uv coolant :)

I've always gone for air cooling. Big heatpipe based things with 12cm fans. I have one on this PC. Double stack of fins and 2 12cm fans. i7 3960K. Not sure what I got in the end, but it looks like a "Noctua NH-D14 SE2011 Processor cooler". It has Noctua fans but I think it was about £50.

okay guys heres my first plan, let me know if I have missed anything, especially if the components are incompatable etc etc

You dont want the XSPC tubing,it has plasticizing issues when used with coloured coolant, you defiantly want primochill tubing instead.

Theres no need to spend that much on a rad/fans,if your on a budget that bundle is not worth considering at all

Basically what you want is the techlabs v2 bundle http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-079-TL

This has the same pump/res combo, good quality compression fittings, better tubing,a decent rad and fans aswell as really good CPU block, and coolant.

Is also far cheaper than the list of parts you have picked out so far.

What is your budget?

at the moment I only have £100 but I can save for a few months and maybe triple that

Are you wanting to add a GPU to the loop in future? how important is noise to you?

For £250 you can build something with high quality components thats silent and could easily handle adding multiple GPU's down the line.

Edit: The bundle linked above is great starting point tho if you want to save a little money. Its just not gonna be particularity quiet

quiet would be nice. I was hoping to keep the CPU loop seperate and create a second loop if needed later

Think about replacing that Supremacy Evo with the Supremacy MX if money is tight. It is right up there performance wise but at a much lower cost.

okay then, lets set my initial buget at £250, what components would be good for a CPU loop and work as quietly as possible. I have already set my sights no a larger Rad due to how warm THE 4790k gets

Use MM to get cheap parts. I picked up an RX360 for £20 and there are similar priced rads about.

Do you have your mind set on a particular size tubing/colour scheme? Reason being is that Mariusz is selling 3m of Red Primochill Advanced LRT (very good stuff) for £8

If you are looking for quiet I assume you have a way of controlling fans? If so I would recommend the Arctic Cooling F12, they may be cheap but they really do push air and run at super low speeds if you want to.

Block is between the EK supreme LTX and supreme MX. The MX is newer and comes with a backplate, LTX is a bit cheaper even when adding the backplate.

Pumps - I don't know nuffin about pumps. I threw my budget out the window when it came to pumps and got a D5, set it to speed 1 and never looked back.

thanks for the info, I already have some green UV stuff so that should suffice for my already green case
