Hi all!

I need to purchase a new Mac this week and I'm torn between a desktop or portable solution.

I'm a graphic designer and illustrator. I've been getting by on a late 2009 iMac with only 2gb of ram and a 256mb graphics card. However my hard drive has failed and it's about time I upgrade.

It's between this iMac:

27-inch:
3.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i5
Turbo Boost up to 3.8GHz
8GB (two 4GB) memory
1TB hard drive1
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M with 4GB video memory

Or the top spec 15" Retina MBP

2.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i7
Turbo Boost up to 3.5GHz
16GB 1600MHz memory
512GB PCIe-based flash storage 1
Intel Iris Pro Graphics
NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M
with 2GB GDDR5 memory

It will be primarily used for Photoshop, illustrator and sketchbook pro, though I'd like to partition and game on it from time to time.

Thanks for the advice all! Really appreciate it

I do a lot of photography work and opted for the 13" retina purely for the portability aspect. The screen is excellent, but a bit small for day to day work. For that reason I have a Dell 24" monitor at home to plug into.

So, for me, choosing between those 2 I would have to pick the iMac, unless you plan on getting a monitor to hook the Retina up to.

I have a 21" Wacom Cintiq that I hook my iMac up to in order to draw and design. That's why I'm thinking the Retina may be decent as a portable solution

I would personally upgrade the ram to 16/32gb and fit a SDD the old mac. I guess your running photoshop, indesign, illustrator and maybe quark? The processor and video card should still be fine, use the rest of your cash for an ipad and a MBA :)

Thanks for the advice Slinxky!

The reason I'm looking at a totally new rig, is because I'm leaving the company this week and want to use my bumper discount before saying farewell!
