I'm due to start a postgrad course this september that will involve lots of train trips, I have mac pro at home but I need a workhorse for on the go.

However the challenge being that I need to do presentations, graphics, research and work and for it to be durable and light.

Oh and I prefer a matt screen.

I;m having a debate between the MBA and a Small MBP.

Any suggestions?

I'd say MBP (although I don't think you can get a matte screen on the MBP). The reason for that is you can upgrade the memory, hdd, etc. It also has a backlit keyboard (the MBA doesn't) which may be useful on a train or in places with poor light.

The MBA is stunningly light. But the MBP is only a little heavier and much more useful in my opinion.

If you decide on the MBP wait until the refresh that should happen between March and June. I'm in a similar position to you.

Air has a higher resolution screen.
Air is lighter.
Pro is easier to upgrade.
Pro is slightly faster.
Pro is a bit faster.

If you go for the Air Ultimate (2.13GHz C2D, 256GB SSD and 4GB RAM) then it shouldn't feel any slower than the base Pro with an SSD in it.

I would definitely suggest you wait and see what the Pro refresh brings as it is likely to give it the same resolution screen as the Air. Also, unless the refresh changes it, you can upgrade the Pro to an SSD and save a load of money.

Many thanks

I am drawn to the MBA for lightness, but each time I head into the apple store I prefer the matte MBP and sturdiness.

It also has to last me a few years, run 1080p projectors, possible 3d graphics work, vmware etc etc.

But when i get home Ill move back to my macpro..choices choices ..

Sorry to hijack the thread but what do you guys think will make up the new MBP ? I too am holding off for this. I would have bought the 2.54 Ghz 500 HD current model. Me thinks I will get more for less come refresh time.....

I suspect the only real change will be sandbridge

Its been kind of dull for the MBP for a time now (15/17). Probably the 13inch will come into the i range but dont expect anything fantastic.

No blu ray, No to usb3, to standard matt option, what else would they want to upgrade LOL
