Overview.

Work hasn't got the server capacity to give me VM's for a test lab, so I'm building my own ultra portable lab for use at home and work.

Requirements.
  1. Portable: It needs to be moved daily in the back of car. As small and light as possible and be able to take a few knocks.
  2. Have the capacity to run up to 8 VM's. (Server 2012R2, SQL, SCCM, 8.1) (note: Not all of them will be turned on at the same time).
  3. Silent: As quite as humanly possible, and dark, no lights that I can't cover up using the old electrical tape. Function over form.

Host OS will be windows 8.1 running VM Workstation 10, with at least 40GB to each VM with space for shared disks like WSUS.

My Hardware thoughts.
16GB Ram minimum, but 32GB capacity with time. (pref with a 16Gb upgrade and not a complete replacement, but will drop this preference for a smaller unit)
3 SSD's. 1 for the host OS, and 2 for the VM's. (I like to keep the VM's on different disks to the host, but again, a preference not a requirement.)
Onboard graphics are fine.

Any idea's people.

Ah, I knew I forgot something. :( sorry.

Yeah, please look at the budget of around £1k.

Also, thanks to both of you for the information.
