Spec me a Mail app

So after being an avid user of browser based mail management for many years I switched to a dedicated app after getting a MacBook Air and loving the standard mail app (even better with Lion) anyway I'm now on Windows and currently using Mozilla Thunderbird which is nowhere near the OSX app.

What I'm looking for is an app that'll notify me of new mail on the task bar like in OSX, I'm guessing this might not be possible in Win 7, also any other app that's like the OSX one would be an improvement, anyone got any recommendations?

I use Opera and the mail notification toasts work pretty well for me. As far as Browser based clients go it's pretty decent.

Only other client I have used is Outlook, have you tried the native Windows 7 client?

I also prefer the OS X notification style but after switching to Windows 7 settled with Thunderbird. I disabled notifications altogether and just check it periodically. This actually helps me being more productive as it's too easy to get distracted by emails.

Outlook updates the icon in the taskbar with a little mail icon when new mail arrives iirc. Other than that the free Live Mail is good, unless you need Exchange support.

have you tried the native Windows 7 client?

erm, there isn't one. vista had one but there is nothing in windows 7.

windows live mail is the free offering available as a download and i have to say i really like it. it works really well with gmail - certainly much better than the full blown outlook client. of course, not everyone uses gmail... :p

Postbox, discovered it after listening to Macpower users, using Thunderbird for a long while then bought this, it's built from TB from what I can see but runs a lot more smoother
