I got a 34C about 3 years ago and I never looked back. Also, get the Merkur Platinum blades - I've tried loads of different one and I always go back to these.
Get yourself a good soap block and brush - Trumpers make some really nice ones and I shave 2-3 times a week and they last me about 18 months each. My favorite is the coconut, currently using the rose one but it's nearly finished so I'm going back to coconut.
Also, get yourself a stypic pencil - you WILL cut yourself when you start but you soon get used to holding the razor and compensating for the correct angles as remember there is no spring loaded blades in these bad boys.
I've just started using an alum block after I shave. I dont suffer from razor burn or anything but if my pores dont close I get oily skin really fast. This so far has been a god send and juding from comments I'v read the small block will last years! Finally, get some aftershave balm of choice. I've been using for years the Nivea for men one that they've just started to advertise on TV. It works for meso I've not changed it.
I have tried various preshave items, but none of them seemed to benefit me as all. I think the ones I've used are aimed at "modern" razors so aren't really needed. Plus I use a beaded facescrub every other day anyway so most of the work of these pre-shaves is redundant.
As for how to shave with a double safety, look on youtube. I saw a few videos on there and I now shave down, rinse, resoap and across, rinse, resoap (using the lovely thick soap left in the brush) and shave lightly up.
I no longer get in-grown hairs or spots due to shaving, shaves much closer than a MachIII or similar and I dont need to shave as often. Shaving is now something I look forward to, rather than the chore it used to be
