No budget. But cheap. Maybe around £200-£400 although that's most likely overkill since it needs absolutely no graphics.

main things to consider is that it needs to be cheap, small(ish, were not talking mini itx) and quiet. minecraft doesn't require all that much processing power just ram and net speed.

will most likely run debian.
 
How many players etc.. ?

I've got a HP Microserver running a small Minecraft server at the moment seems to be capable enough, bought it while HP were running a cashback deal & stuck 8GB of ram in it. (Cashback deal expires on 31st December so would need to be quick)
 
probz wont even be thought about till next year, just window shopping.

would like room for about 40 players, although i doubt it would get that much use. dont mind spare power though, since it could also be used as a file /Apache server
