Afternoon all,

Want to free up some space in my room. Thinking about getting rid of my HDTV and my old Dell E207WFP just to get a decent screen that will last a while.

No idea where to look as basically I want a screen that does everything. Obviously it would need to display 1080p.

Cheers.

few questions.

how much have you got to spend ?

how much space do you have ?

wall or free standing ?

and what size do you think you will need ?

Would you be flexible to get a stand-alone Freeview box?

I ask, because this gives you a much wider choice of monitors and is more cost effective overall. Modern HDMI freeview boxes can be tiny - so it won't be clutting your place up too much. Also, the new DVB-T2 standard is rolling out around the country allowing you to watch 1080i (HDTV) over Freeview, to get this you will need a stand-alone box (which also supports DVB-T2) or one of the very new TVs that have them built in.

needs to have PS3

I assume you mean the display has a HDMI connections for PS3 connection, not a built in PS3 :)

Finally, what do you want to do with sound? Do you want a built in speakers (usually very crummy quality), new stand-alone PC speakers or do you already have an existing setup you will be using (perhaps and amp + speaker)?

Thanks for the quick reply.

1) Not too sure yet, should have a good bit but I don't want to go overboard. Basically anything that's good value for money with an excellent picture quality.

2) Would be going on a huge Ikea desk, space is no issue.

3) Could a monitor be both? I know my Dell is both free standing and mountable to a wall with a bracket. I'd like the option of having both things.

4) Anything that will output 1080p, i'm guessing 22"? No idea though.

Also, would the screen come with a set of speakers built in or a headphone jack? I've got a DVI to HDMI adapter, tried it on my Dell and while there's picture it has no sound.

Cheers.

Samsung T220HD (22") or T240HD (24") would probably fit the bill nicely, the 22" model can be had for under £200.

Has all the connections you'll ever need 2xHDMIs, DVI, VGA, Component, Scart, and has built in speakers and digital tuner.

I had the T240HD which was predominantly used as the PC monitor and was more than happy with it, also came in handy when I wanted to connect the Wii via component and the 360 via HDMI.

It's now being used as the bedroom telly, as I have gone down the 120Hz 3D route :D

EDIT: the 22" is only capable of 1680x1050 so not 1080p, the 24" does 1920x1200 however and could be perfect for you?

Cheers coupe69. Looks a smart telly that does. I wanted to know what people opinions on them were, i'm mainly bothered about the picture quality as a guy in our drawing office at work has recently got a Dell 'Ultrasharp', it's the best quality picture I think i've ever seen in my life lol. Checked the prices today and £450+ is too steep for me. Does that Samsung one give a really nice clear picture with no blurring?
