i currently have a 22" widescreen acer served me well but starting to get a little out of date.

budget £200 - £300 absolute max
in black would be nice as everything else is.

i dont understand enough to decide weather to go 24" or 27" i look forward to hearing your comments.

Hi there,

May I ask what graphics card you are using?

Personally, I would go I would either go with the Dell U2412M - which has a 1920x1200 (1200p) resolution and uses a nice quality E-IPS panel. An IPS type panel like this offers really good colour accuracy and wide viewing angles compared to a TN panel, however the pixel responsiveness isn't as good. Therefore it will be really nice for photoshop and TV/movies though for fast-paced games it won't be ideal. However, for MMOs it should be fine.

Alternatively, you could go for a 24in 120Hz TN panel 1920x1080 (1080p) like this BenQ XL2420T. This monitor is really nice for games (since the 120Hz refresh rate makes motion feel smoother) and the image quality for photoshop and videos is still pretty good - though not quite on the level of an IPS panel like in the Dell. If your main use of the PC will be gaming then I would go with this BenQ monitor - just so long as you have a powerful graphics card that can make use of the 120Hz refresh rate.

Ben Q *** (apparently for the win abbreviation casuese stars to appear )there was a 27" version of this for similar money is the screen quality not as good as the 24" suggested above ?

The link to the BenQ G2750 is broken (you forgot the colon after http so it returned as http//URL with the correct prefix before the broken one). It isn't really a comparable monitor to the XL2420T as it doesn't feature the same connectivity, features or a 120Hz refresh rate. I can't speak for performance as I haven't used it but from my experience with BenQ's budget 27" TN panels the image quality is most likely not as good, either.
