So after a new monitor (maybe 2). Around 24'', might go to 27'' if it's a good bang for buck.
Will be used mainly for games at 1080p and work but also ideally after one with a thunderbolt connection (it's hooked up to a MBP).
Budged is around £300 max (unless it's something special) :)

With regards to Thunderbolt, from what I can gather, there are currently only three monitors available that use Thunderbolt:

LG 34UM95-P
- 3440x1440 IPS (21:9)
- £700-800 (B-grade for £660)

Apple Thunderbolt display 27" (not sure if that's really the official name?)
- 2560x1440 IPS
- £650-800

LG 27MB85Z
- 2560x1440 IPS
- £500-600
- still new, so no stock anywhere, yet

So they all have the wrong resolution, and would also approximately DOUBLE your budget. In other words, you should forget about Thunderbolt for now. Can't comment on the quality, haven't seen reviews. Though didn't even try to look for them, as they're clearly still carrying a price premium, so not worth the consideration for most customers.

As for the actual recommendations:

Asus SonicMaster MX279H
- 1920x1080 IPS
- £276
- This has been the de-facto recommendation I've given for the last 6 months. And I've never heard anyone come back complaining. :D

BenQ GW2760HS
- 1920x1080 VA
- £192
- PWM-free
- VA panel, so potential off-angle gamma shift (though should be still miles better than TN panels)
- Cheaper recommendation I've usually given as an alternative to the Asus above
